For those that dont like to read, the moral of the story is be careful at discount tire. I went by there this afternoon to get my tires rotated because i havent had time to do it myself and it was convienient. As I was walking into the store to see how long it would take; an extended cab long bed chevrolet fell off the rack and hit one of the building posts. It smashed up the left rear of the bed pretty bad and did who knows what to the underside of the truck. Needless to say i turned around and got back in my truck and decided i would make time to do it myself. This was at Concord Mills by the way if anyone is planning on going there anytime soon.

anyone remember back in october when they had that killer deal? I opted out of the 'replacement certificates' to make the deal even sweeter. Didn't even have 200 miles on them and one of my belts broke going down the highway. Doubt they would even try to replace it either.

I worked at the chevrolet place on 401 north of fuquay a while back. Their garage is 8 bays on each side, with a block wall that ran down the middle, so the cars are pulled in hood to hood against this wall. Long story short, someone popped a clutch, hit the wall, and a half dozen cars got a block wall tipped over on them, including a vette.

so you haven't had the 15 spare minutes that it requires to rotate your own tires? i guess i just can't fathom anyone with a jack and a set of stands actually paying someone to do this task for them...

^discount tire does rotations for freeYeah, accidents happen. I remember when I was getting my car's alignment adjusted at "this one shop in cary" (undisclosed location)... a car fell off the lift right behind me. It was pretty scary. Almost crapped my pants.

^ in did it on my girfriends car over at Jeepman's a few weeks ago, maybe 10 min if that, with one jack, one jackstand and an impact wrenchjack up the right front, take the wheel off, put the jackstand under it, then go left rear, left front, right rear, and back to the right front, you have the tire to go on in that order, piece of cake

BUT, if you went to Discount Tire previously to get a rotation, you're looking at 2 hours minimum......You have to factor in the time it takes to figure out they overtightened all the lugs, time it takes to find a suitable breaker bar, time to let Liquid Wrench do its thing, time to find another socket for the one you stripped, etc.
5/7/2008 10:39:12 AM
i really dont understand that at all, i used an impact gun with torque limiting sockets for years at work and it's not hard to feel it out, i would recheck them every once in a while with a torque wrench and they were always +/- 5 ft-lbs or so, never stripped one, hell i have had some damn fucked up ones come in that with a little common sense will come off, then just clean up the threads and replace the nut afterwards

I just had one bad experience with them. Bought a car a while back and agreed to terms with the seller-asked him to take care of putting new tires on and he agreed. He went to Discount, I got the car and was happy.A couple months later I had a flat one morning. Tried to get it off with my tools, 1 lug would not budge. Tried everything possible, had friends come over with their tools and it was like trying to pull the sword from the stone. Had to have Discount bring a tow truck to get it back to them. They actually had to cut the bolt and lug off and replace that as well.

Wasn't there a thread about a brand new Lotus Elise falling off a lift at a tire place a little while ago? I forget what board it was on...

I don't know about Discount Tire, but I always specifically request that the lugs be torqued to 75 or 80 foot pounds with a torque wrench.
5/7/2008 11:43:01 AM
ive gotten like 3-4 sets of tires there...never had a problem

^^ not all just some
5/7/2008 4:30:43 PM
no tire place that i know of other than costco uses a torque wrench all the time.
5/7/2008 5:44:03 PM
torque sticks are just as good

5/8/2008 9:07:55 AM
crossroads exxon is about the cheapest around here, i really couldnt tell you though, i always just do my own
5/8/2008 9:48:43 AM
for tires i go to costco, b/c they treat my car like gold.
5/8/2008 11:15:54 AM
I always sell a car before it needs tires and buy another one.
