wanted to get my mom one but wtf is up with resolutions like 600x200200 pixels?!?! that's ridiculous. why are all of them so low?

smaller pixels in a tighter pattern costs more money to produce. Look at LCD monitors to see how much an 8x10 digital picture frame would actually cost. It'd be well over $100.

i know - that's true, but 200px is like worse than my cell phone outputs now. it's like a little banner at the top of a page.

Save your money!

yeah, i was thinking the same thing before christmas when I was buying one.
5/6/2008 3:47:25 PM
because the majority of people buying them do not even know what the word resolution means?
5/6/2008 4:00:22 PM
^ yep, HAHA
5/6/2008 4:05:48 PM
but still, most that I see are still over 72ppi. Most are 75-85 in the ones I've pulled up.7" diagonal = 6 2/3 x 3 1/4 480x234

I never really got the whole digital picture frame idea.

I took an old laptop and made a digital picture frame for my wife. Its a little thicker than the ones they sell at the store, but its got a 12" screen, and wireless connectivity. It runs linux and just runs a slideshow built from crawling directories. She just drops pictures in the folders over the wireless network to change whats displaying on the screen. Its an old pentium laptop, but runs the stuff fine. I got the laptop for $60 i think.I can take pics of it later if you wanna see.

agentlion, my comment was more of sarcasm than anything else. I know what uses and targeted market, but honestly, they are no more than simple, thoughtless gifts/trinket. It's another one of those products to buy your parents something other than a shirt or tie...
5/7/2008 6:57:31 PM
my digital picture frame cost 700 bucks and goes up to 1024x768
5/7/2008 7:05:39 PM
For 700 bucks, you could have bought a really nice 24" LCD, shit, just get a cheap 37" or 40" LCD HDTV and turn that into a picture frame.

i THINK he is sarcastically saying that is what he has done...........I hope

Here are some pics of the frame I made.It is a shadow box from michaels or whatever, with some framing mat, and then the laptop just taken out of its case and mounted in the box.Front of the frame:Back of the frame, you can see the vent holes at the top, and if you look close, some of the bolts in the lower left that mount the laptop motherboard to the back board. The frame booting up KDE on MandrakeThe frame showing pictures:The LCD looks really crappy in these pictures, but its very bright when you are looking at it in person.

I made it around 4 years ago when the digital frames were first coming out, and were like $800-$1000. I saw it in the store and went "shit, i can make that for a lot less".
