Is it legal to kill pigeons?

I've googled it and can't seem to find an official document on it.

if you live in a bird sanctuary, which you probably do if there are pigeons around, it is not legal.

at crabtree mall what they do to keep the pigeons from creating mountains of shit(cause they perch in the same spots and dookie in the same spot constantly) is putting up spikey things where the birds would perch...it worked as there was no more dookie mountains

And you're asking a college bulletin board in North Carolina if it is legal to shoot birds 1600 miles away.

Wat?

you do realize that killing them would be like swatting flies

(there will always be more flies)

you already said that anti-nesting spikes were part of your plan, so why does killing appeal to you?

admit it; you would find pleasure from the unnecessary killing of innocent birds -- not for food, or sport, but for sadistic fun

and you know your neighbors (or anyone else who learned of it,) would rat on you

so you want to hide behind the law (or lack of, in this case)

sicko

no, sadistic fun would be using a pellet gun or bb gun to injure the little shit factories rather than outright killing them.

call animal control tomorrow and post it. They are not migratory so I think as long as you can use a rifle with in cities limits you are okay.

There was a article I read earlier in the week about a someone shooting pigeons in Chicago (I think). It is illegal there...

JERRY: You ran over some pigeons? How many?

GEORGE: What ever they had. Miranda thinks I'm a butcher but it's not my fault is it? Don't we have a deal with the pigeons?

JERRY: Of course. We have a deal. They get out of the way of our cars, we look the other way on the statue defecation.

GEORGE: Right! And these pigeons broke the deal. I will not accept the blame for this.

ok, the reason i'm asking tdub is in case the spike strips don't work (and possibly because a bb/pellet gun would be cheaper and more fun, not talking about an actual gun.)

i'm curious because i couldn't find any relevant information from Google and was wondering if there was a federal law.

in addition, i thought maybe they'd fall under the pest/vermin category, thus killing them would be fine... like rats... the information i DID find on Google is that this is how it's governed in UK... which isn't altogether relevant.

why the fuck would the federal government have a law on killing pigeons?

this is a local/state issue. so look there.

I know people like to bitch about them, but I've never seen a situation where they've been a problem, especially in a residential situation like this.

i have no idea if this will work for your roof but...

at my aunt and uncle's house at the beach they have a dock that the seagulls love to shit on. they will cover every square inch of that thing in shit, and the boat too. so, my uncle put a length of fishing line along one side of the dock, and then over the boat when it's on the lift. the birds are afraid of flying into it and getting stuck, so they avoid it. it works very well there. you might could do something similar.

found it finally.
http://www.denvergov.org/AnimalControl/InsectAnimalDiseaseControlVectorControl/PigeonsinDenver/tabid/426117/Default.aspx

it's not permitted. not even air guns.

Quote :
"SHOOTING
Shooting is NOT permissible in Denver. The Revised Municipal Code of the City and County of Denver states in
Sec. 38-121. Firing or discharging dangerous or deadly weapons:
“It shall be unlawful for any person, except a law enforcement officer in the performance of duty, to fire or discharge a revolver or pistol of any description, machine gun, shotgun or rifle which may be used for the explosion of cartridges, or any air gun, gas operated gun, spring gun, or any instrument, toy or weapon commonly known as a "peashooter," "slingshot" or "beany," or any bow made for the purpose of throwing or projecting missiles of any kind by any means whatsoever, whether such instrument is called by name set forth herein or by any other name…”"

thanks.

^^ yeah it's illegial, but you won't get in trouble if you have a silent air/pellet gun. Don't shoot your neighbors in the face and you will be fine. Something tells me you would just get a warning anyway if you were caught.

I hit one with my car yesterday. Pigeons are filthy creatures that will take over a building if you let them. Do what you can to get rid of them before they start posing health problems for you. Some pigeons moved in on a vacant building across the street from my grandparents and got inside. They had a major job to get a crew out there with gas masks and everything to get them out and the building cleaned up.

but you should at least know that you're wrong, rather than acting like there's no problem with your attitude

Are you denying that pigeons can pose a serious health hazard, or are you suggesting I should have swerved onto the pedestrian-filled sidewalk to avoid hitting the pigeon with my car?

You are probably one of the idiots that exacerbates the pigeon problem in cities by feeding them.

we are all animals

and animals have a natural (god/nature given) right to pursue happiness and life

even some humans, in search of shelter, cause health problems and property damage

why IN THE HELL did you ask me if I was "denying that pigeons can pose a serious health hazard"?

where did I say ANYTHING CLOSE to that?

(don't be stupid)

Quote :
"are you suggesting I should have swerved onto the pedestrian-filled sidewalk to avoid hitting the pigeon with my car?"

no you fucking idiot -- what the fuck is wrong with you anyway?

if an animal is in front of your car, attempt to safely slow down

(I promise that if you're moving slowly enough, the birds will get out of your way -- if not, nbd)

BUT WAHHHH I'M A HUMAN AND I HAVE A RIGHT TO BUILD ROADS AND CITIES AND DO AS I PLEASE!!!

if you don't like it, you can get out and walk

(do you really need a car in a big city anyway?)

Quote :
"Some pigeons moved in on a vacant building"

not the pigeons fault -- they are only trying to live and start a family (like you)

for example: if you don't want homeless people from squatting, procreating, and dirtying your property

you secure it -- no differently than if the issue is pigeons or rats

despite the failings of anthropocentric asshats like yourself, humans and other animals can coexist

Quote :
"You are probably one of the idiots that exacerbates the pigeon problem in cities by feeding them"

wrong again, although I'd be tempted to, just to piss off people like you

"I use one [scarecrow], but not for crows. I have a HUGE problem with starlings getting into my chicken coop and stealing the feed and just generally making an incredible mess.

I find that it is reasonably effective, with a few simple techniques. First, it should look as human-like as possible. Two sticks with a shirt and a straw hat won't work. We use an old dressmaker's dummy with a styrofoam wigstand head. We dress it in bright, loose-fitting clothes.

The loose-fitting clothes are part of the plan. As the wind hits it, the clothes flop around. Anything that adds movement improves it's effectiveness.

Finally, we move the dummy every other day or so. If it sits in one place too long, the birds get used to it and ignore it. For the same reason, we change it's "outfit" occasionally.

As I said, it's reasonably effective, and the neighbors get a kick out of checking to see what she's wearing today!"

Ever seen a crow attack a hawk? Or chimpanzees conduct raids on other chimpanzee tribes over territory? We just happen to be more effective at it.

I'm not saying wholesale slaughter of animals for the sake of entertainment is morally right, but you can't appeal to the "animal code" on this one.

just go to the toy store and buy one of those realistic looking toy snakes. Put it up where the pigeons are perching, and they wont perch there anymore.

they really dont serve "that much" purpose...look at the passenger pigeon for example...they would flock in the millions...just sitting on the ground that could be used for crops and eating the vegetation and what not...they extincted that thing...probably worked out for the better
