90% of the time they tell them to take it in, which really isnt bad advice if you are calling in on cartalk anyway

the other 10% of the time they tell people to drive to the bad part of town and leave the keys in it, or pour gas on it, which is my favorite [Edited on April 26, 2008 at 2:26 PM. Reason : PUZZLER FTW]

they gave some bad advice one time.a woman was looking for a 4wd suv (to go offroad b/c of work) in her price range.kia whatever and hyundai santafethey chose the santafe with it's unibody construction and part time 4wd.

eh, too much filler and laughing at themselves and not enough actual car talk. but its entertaining none the less. the best one i've heard was a guy calling in to ask if he could connect an electric fence to the body of his car in order to keep goats from jumping on it.

What I like: they've been in the game for a long time obviously. They've been doing this stuff for so long that their diagnoses seem pretty damn good given that they don't aren't anywhere near the car in question. Like one time they diagnosed a bad ignition switch based on some odd electrical problems and later on they followed up with the lady and they were correct. What I don't like: their overall taste in performance/performance vehicles. It's kind of crotchedy. If you read their columns and listen to them, they are constantly bitching about how cars have too much power these days and no sports car should be much faster than a Miata. I do like that they are wise enough to discourage most people not to get in over their head with a DIY repair, but one time they insisted that this kid (highschool) who seemed like he was genuinely interested in learning how to work on cars shouldn't get an older one. Yes they are unreliable and unsafe by today's standards, but how is he going to learn? Most people here who can work on cars started out fixing some POS.

^they're a bunch of liberals. what do you expect?
4/27/2008 8:18:51 AM
sure they make recommendations that a large number of twwers might not, but given their general audience, they usually do a real good joband they are pretty damn intelligent when it comes to vehicles. sure they dont know everything or the latest mods, etc. but they are smart, they have the education to back it and they have been doing it for a long time. eh?

yeah. they are bright guys. and they do give good advice. good advice is getting a professional to get the job done, not what we all say "do it yourself".they dont want to be held responsible. of course if someone calls and they are mechanically inclined, then yeah they'll probably tell them to try it themselves.
