Since Tuesday I've been eating immodium like they're Flintstones vitamins. Any idea what would cause this, or more importantly, is there anything I can do to help get over this? I can't think of anything that the doctor would say to me other then stay hydrated and ride it out so I haven't gone. This was accompanied by weakness, nausea, and vomiting the last few days but today I feel fine except for this one lingering symptom.

Sounds like when Norovirus nearly killed NC State.
4/25/2008 10:54:55 AM
Sounds like food poisoning. Have you had any trouble eating, like not feeling hungry or not able to keep food down?
4/25/2008 10:58:16 AM
sounds like muddbuttgood use of "ride it out" though
4/25/2008 11:00:06 AM
have you went camping lately?.....ingested any unpurified stream/lake water? Gardia's a bitch.
4/25/2008 11:03:39 AM
I'd lay off the immodium and let your system flush out what ever is irritating your guts. Food poisoning should have cleared up by now. Drink water and sports drinks, they'll hydrate you and help to flush the system out. OR You're fine, You've only been drinking water or light meals for the past four days, start eating bulkier food to slow your intestines down.
4/25/2008 11:06:20 AM
you drinking lots of gateraid or something with electrolites? Drink lots of thatgastrointestinal bugs like e. coli alter the membrane permiablity of the cells in your intestines, causing large amounts of fluid and electrolites to be lost and thus causing you to shit your brains out. Theres a cool video animation video of this on youtube somewhere. Anyway, i dont know how well that will work to stop the shitting but it will help replinish some of the important stuff you lost.

see, wouldn't we all better off if we could check with an actual doctor without having to worry about how much it was going to cost?

^^ NCSU students can see an actual doctor without worrying about how much it costs. The care sucked from what I've seen personally and heard from other people. I'd rather pay and go to a doctor who gives a damn.Government health care will be like that, but much much worse.[Edited on April 25, 2008 at 12:12 PM. Reason : s]

At the vet clinic we often advise pets owners of pets with diarrhea to limit how much the pet eats, and stay on a bland diet for a few days of rice & chicken or of something like I/D or EN gastrointestinal diets, and if it doesn't clear up then its time for an appointment. At which they usually get a standard antibiotic, or something stronger depending on what the tests reveal. And on occasion they just need a dewormer. This is in no way medical advice, and just a sharing of my most common experience with medical professionals dealing with diarrhea in several mammal species.

if it doesn't resolve in the near future, you should go back to your M.D. and ask for more testing. Most GI problems (viral, bacterial) should clear up in 3 days or so unless you have cholera or something, which is unlikely. Make sure you drink your gatorade or some other drink with nutrients and some calories in it, and be sure to brush your teeth after doing so we don't have to deal with cavities!

wisely the one (will be an MD in a few weeks) doctor on here has had little to sayseriously giving advice based on the vets office?suggesting antibiotics?good lord... way to practice medicine without a licensei wish all Dr TWW threads would go away.the only sound advice that can be given ishydrate and go to the doctorgo to urgent care, go to the ED, go to the minute clinichttp://www.minuteclinic.com -- its cheap and fast go to the doctor because 4 days of unchecked diarrhea means you probably are in a negative fluid balance at this point... your electrolytes are probably screwy and you probably need a liter or two of Normal Salineand you cant get that unless you go to the doctor...
4/25/2008 10:30:46 PM
Going to the NC state doctor is the equivalent of going to your mom when you're 5. They can do about as much and if its slightly serious you end up going to see a real doctor. I swear i could be a doctor at NC state.

i must have this too.I'm on day 2 of butt pissing.at least i can sit up for more than 2 minutes at a time.and my fucking kidneys hurt.
4/26/2008 8:02:44 AM
-lots and lots and lots of fluids...anything without caffeine is fine, but caffeine can actually make dehydration worse-try getting some of that Pedialyte for kids and drinking a bottle of it...get the grape, it tastes the least bad, but still it's not exactly tasty...this will effectively restore your electrolytes-eat bananas...diarrhea will deplenish potassium...bananas help with that-BRAT diet is good-yogurt does help restore bacteria to your intestine, but be careful as milk-containing foods can sometimes make it worse-instead of immodium, try some kaopectate...I've found this much more effective for me than immodium-if this doesn't stop in a day or two, I would definitely go to the doctor...at the least, the doctor will want to check your electrolyte levels and maybe even want a stool sample.[Edited on April 26, 2008 at 1:02 PM. damn Duke I know advice on TWW (even if it's The Lounge ) isn't intended to take the place of a licensed physicianand it's not like I don't have health insurance, but the doctors really aren't gonna give me anything but cipro or a z-pack and it'll take even longer for my gut flora to regulate and me to start feeling better...I just wanted some insight into anyone that may have had diarrhea for 4 days cause that's an unusually long timeand to all that replied I thank you and I feel much better...24 hours off the immodium means it's back to grilling bratwursts and drinking beerand I was a student at state when the norovirus went around, I'm so glad I was living off-campus then and dodged the bullet

"In many cases, acute infectious diarrhea is a mild, limited annoyance. However, worldwide acute infectious diarrhea has a huge impact, causing over five milliondeaths per year. While most deaths are among children under five years of age in developing nations, the impact, even in developed countries, is considerable. For example, over 250,000 individuals are admitted to hospitals in the United States each year because of one of these episodes. Rapid diagnosis and proper treatment can prevent much of the suffering associated with these devastating illnesses."Salmonella typhi--- typhoid feverenteriditis.... you poop a lot... no MAJOR complications other than a risk for dehydration.Campylobacter... poop a lot, feel like death and has been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome --get this and its VERY likely that you'll get to know me personally. other complications: "Campylobacter may also cause appendicitis or infect the abdominal cavity (peritonitis), the heart (carditis), the central nervous system (meningitis), the gallbladder (cholecystitis) the urinary tract, and the blood stream."e. coli --nasty common lil bugger... E. coli O157:H7.Shiga toxin is one of the most potent toxins known to man, so much so that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists it as a potential bioterrorist agent (CDC, n.d.). It seems likely that DNA from Shiga toxin-producing Shigella bacteria was transferred by a bacteriophage (a virus that infects bacteria) to otherwise harmless E. coli bacteria, thereby providing them with the genetic material to produce Shiga toxin. Although E. coli O157:H7 is responsible for the majority of human illnesses attributed to E. coli, there are additional Stx-producing E. coli (e.g., E. coli O121:H19) that can also cause hemorrhagic colitis and post-diarrheal hemolytic uremic syndrome (D+HUS). HUS is a syndrome that is defined by the trilogy of hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells), thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), and acute kidney failure. "They are hardy organisms that can survive several weeks on surfaces such as counter tops, and up to a year in some materials like compost. make sure you wash your veggies!!c.diff -- quite foul smelling "# Kidney failure. In some cases, dehydration can occur so quickly that the kidneys shut down (kidney failure).# A hole in the bowel (bowel perforation). This results from extensive damage to the lining of your large intestine. A perforated bowel can spill bacteria from the intestine into your abdominal cavity, leading to a life-threatening infection (peritonitis).# Toxic megacolon. In this condition, the colon becomes grossly distended when it is unable to expel gas and stool. Left untreated, your colon can rupture, causing bacteria from the colon to enter your abdominal cavity. A ruptured colon requires emergency surgery and in some cases may be fatal.# Death. Even mild to moderate C. difficile infections can quickly become fatal if not treated promptly with the appropriate medication."most diarrhea just makes you miserable for a while .. but sometimes it can kill youjust stop and think a few seconds when it comes to your health
