i even have it configured so if i'm not on my network at home, it tries to make an ipsec tunnel to my house and will back up over that

i had seen a lot of stuff online where people were having a lot of problems with it, but it's worked perfectly so far... even over wifi...

I've got my time machine hooked up to a 1tb firewire 800 drive. It is uber...i like scrolling back to Nov 2007 just for fun lol

I have two laptops for my wife and my main machines and a Mac Mini, which I use as an entertainment PC under my TV. I just put my Time Machine HDD on the Mini and share it, then both laptops backup wireless to the Mini. It's a perfect, 1-step configuration, hands off backup solution

Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) & Backup (in Vista Ultimate)

^^ that sounds good, but with Time Machine, Apple really went a step further and made the configuration and management of your backups completely painless and transparent. It's literally 1-click - the first time you plug in a USB or firewire HDD, you'll get a popup that says "do you want to use this as your Time Machine backup?". If you click Yes, it will do the backup in the background and keep it synced from then on, with no other interference or instructions or setup.

VSS/Backup may be a viable or even better or more powerful overall backup solution, but I seriously doubt they make it as drop-dead simple as Time Machine does, which really is the key factor in getting "the masses" to backup their machines

does anyone know if time machine uses svn, cvs, etc. or is it totally custom for apple? i'm just curious.

doesn't use any sort of open system as far as i can tell

the files stored in the Backup folder on my TM drive all appear to be normal files for all intents and purposes

i think it uses spotlight in some fashion to keep track of files that have been changed, and then maybe runs diff against them? not really sure...

and what hardware is so expensive that you can't afford it? it's been shown again and again that the consumer level macs are now on par with equivalently equipped PCs. They just don't make any bargain basement models

its not so expensive that i can't afford it, it's just that i can't justify it. having said that, i can't justify a $500 deal from dell either. i guess i've just transitioned to that "upgrade when you need to" mindset and i don't need to yet.
