now if this thread doesn't get locked like my vista sp1 thread i am really going to be pissed.[Edited on April 22, 2008 at 3:34 PM. Reason : i think i made it with my other account too]
4/22/2008 3:33:39 PM
why? the article i linked was from today and it says its finished but not ready for the public...i was going to make a thread a few weeks ago cause i was talking to this m$ guy on a plane who had a few beverages in him and he told me it was coming out at the end of the month but it was supposed to be hush hush...anyway i dont know of any tww policies about not having SP threads...especially since vista blows and XP is a lot more stable alreadyalso it appears your thread was locked since there was already a Vista thread...i dont know of an all encompassing XP thread since most people have run XP for years[Edited on April 22, 2008 at 3:40 PM. Reason : .]
4/22/2008 3:39:42 PM
mr . bobbydigital said that an update or a service pack is not thread worthy. i think otherwise and obviously you do to.
4/22/2008 3:43:08 PM
well maybe he'll treat this differently since its for a better OS...if it gets locked i wont mind though, the knowledge has already been brought!
4/22/2008 3:50:44 PM
xp is now inferior to vista, due sp1.
4/22/2008 3:53:05 PM
4/22/2008 3:57:27 PM
^^except xp sp3 still outperforms vista sp1... and about the Vista SP1 thread, there was already a Vista thread on the first couple pages... there's no official windows xp thread.[Edited on April 22, 2008 at 3:59 PM. Reason : ,]
4/22/2008 3:58:58 PM
when does a thread become official?
4/22/2008 3:59:47 PM
i meant inclusive, there's no thread that this would "fall under" / be included in.Vista is all-inclusive for all things Vista related.... if there's not a thread about it, then it can be more specificbut for instance, i'm not going to talk about beta 5 in a beta 4 thread... that would just be silly.
4/22/2008 4:02:04 PM
Once it's sworn in by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, duh.
4/22/2008 4:03:21 PM
i'm actually just fulfilling my 'asshole' quota for today

http://news.softpedia.com/news/XP-SP3-RC-vs-Vista-SP1-RC-Benchmarking-Irrelevant-Says-Microsoft-72682.shtmlAnother benchmark:http://www.principledtechnologies.com/Clients/Reports/Microsoft/VistaXPBusResp.pdfSeems they're about the same.^Plus that test involved one gig of ram. Who uses vista with one gig of ram? I think it would be more appropriate to test it with 2-4, and from what i can tell the benchmarks are about the same once you use more modern specs. Although i think my biggest thing is that i use Vista 64 and it's faster than XP 32 (xp 64 support sucks) mainly because it can address more ram.
4/22/2008 10:06:56 PM
yeah, with 4gb of ram, there is a NOTICEABLE difference between vista 64 and xp 32 (i haven't tried vista 32 or xp 64, though, so my experience is incomplete)the highest usage i've ever gotten out of vista 64 is 66% of 4gb, and it's constantly between 40-45gb just being on, which probably accounts for the snappier responses in vista compared to xp
4/22/2008 10:38:16 PM
Yeah i booted up XP just to compare because i haven't booted up XP on this machine in a while, and everything was slow and not as responsive as vista. This also might be due to the fact it was 32 bit xp and 64 bit vista though.
4/22/2008 10:53:32 PM
i agree completely 64-bit Vista kills 32-bit XP, and is exponentially noticeable with memory 4GB+ and overbut 32-bit Vista is an entirely different beast and i can tell you it IS indeed MUCH slower than 32-bit XP
4/23/2008 12:03:35 AM
how stable is 64-bit Vista?
4/23/2008 12:04:13 AM
i've run 64-bit enterprise version for 8 months, not one single instability, but it's a work disk image and it's on a Dell...
4/23/2008 12:21:13 AM
^^I've been running vista ultimate 64 bit for almost a year i guess. i keep it running usually 24/7 on the computer i put together. Never had a single issue with it. ^^^http://www.principledtechnologies.com/Clients/Reports/Microsoft/VistaXPBusResp.pdfAccording to that benchmark i see no differences. I guess it all depends on who benchmarks it.
4/23/2008 12:38:26 AM
^that's one report, and all they talk about are Microsoft products (IE, Office) oh, yeah, and Quickbooks, in a business setting. not really relevant for home usersbenchmarks are not always truthful for everyday activities, multitasking, etc. i still think XP is faster unless you have Vista prefetch EVERYTHING, then since it's actually hogging resources to store all the stuff, it loads/launches faster, but at the cost of having newer hardware and 4GB or more of memory.Vista performs better with better hardware, but there is a wall about how low Vista can go before XP is faster in nearly every regard.for gaming i'll stick with XP thanks anyways.[Edited on April 23, 2008 at 12:55 AM. ^^we've had this discussion before, i'm not going to argue you about it, i play different games than you.for online FPS's i'd rather have faster load times than DX10 effects, just my opinion, for me getting in the game faster is more important... along with staying "in" the game... i've had numerous crashs to desktop on games running in Vista (when they weren't designed for Vista)
4/23/2008 10:43:04 AM
i use XP to dick around on my laptop while I'm playing games on my 360

You probably want to hold off on the link I posted above. It appears to be RC2

The full release is now on MSDN. But you got to have a subscription to get the ISO.

4/23/2008 3:30:08 PM
btw it'd be pretty nice if windows could go ahead and ask some timezone, product key, domain, etc early on and save your answers in a little file so you could enter some info at first and basically walk away without having to wait to enter info throughout the installi realize you can do this through deployment, but i just mean with a standalone install

http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/27/0043216&from=rssDetails On Windows XP SP3 Leaked "We were the first to break the news on the release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and the final RTM schedule of Windows XP Service Pack 3. Now, we will be the first to release the full details on Microsoft's Windows XP Service Pack 3, which as we know will be available for manual update on April 29, 2008."interesting comments by the slashdot readersdirect: http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=536&pgno=0

There is good reason why Service packs roll out in stages. Glad you guys are eager to try it out, but I'd pretty highly advise waiting for it to arrive for the general public, unless you have some immediate need.
4/27/2008 4:07:45 PM
this is the RTM version though... there's no reason to wait until the 29th...
4/27/2008 4:42:00 PM
RTM just means that's the package that goes out first. It goes to vendors and partners first because they have close contact with MS, and so problems can be quickly identified and resolved.By the time this hits windows update it will either a) have maaannny more hotfixes rolled into a later package, or b) have those hotfixes in a separate rollup that will be downloaded with the SP3 update.
4/27/2008 9:32:15 PM
they don't include the IE7 update...or the .net 3.0 I believe...
4/27/2008 9:54:56 PM
rtm's on msdn as well (if you have access)
4/28/2008 2:49:36 PM
http://www.crn.com/software/207403064Like I said, RTM doesn't mean ready for everyone.
4/29/2008 5:29:03 PM
They're releasing exactly the same version. The reason for the delay is to block people running RMS from installing XP SP3 and Vista SP1:
