I've thought about what I could do today to make a more positive impact on the environment than usual. So far all I came up with was using a metal spoon (in lieu of plastic disposable) for my cereal this morning. I suck at this.

i've been saving bacon grease for over a year just to pour down the drain today!!!

What are you going to use those hundreds of gigajoules for, duke?Flying around at supersonics speeds and heating an engine?

That's enough energy to power over a dozen households for an entire year.Equivalent to around 150 tons of TNT.(Man, TNT kind of sucks.)
4/22/2008 10:22:05 PM
well, we actually only burned prob 12-13k pounds since we finished the first flight faster than expected and the 2nd one didn't happen.there's no way that 30k of Jet-A has the same energy as 150k of TNT. i'm played with TNT before, too, and it's pretty serious stuff.[Edited on April 22, 2008 at 10:24 PM. Reason : asfd][Edited on April 22, 2008 at 10:36 PM. Reason : i don't doubt the figure about the households, though]

Sorry, I was still using the original figure. I should have adjusted downward for the lower usage.Anyways, according to Wiki, jet fuel has over ten times the energy per mass of TNT. TNT does a bit better if you compare by volume.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density

^^^ i stand corrected, then.i guess TNT is just more impressive since it releases its energy so rapidly (relatively speaking, at least...it's pretty moderate speed in the world of high explosives)Petroleum fuels like Jet-A are pretty strong, now that i really think about it. A Prowler engine is roughly the size of two 55-gallon drums placed end-to-end (not counting the exhaust ducting), and can put out more than 10,000 pounds of static thrust (and i would presume noticeably more when airborne and ingesting air at 500 knots). that's pretty amazing if you think about it.actually, this is also why we're so dependant on gasoline. The shit's pretty tough to beat from an energy per unit mass (or volume) per dollar standpoint.[Edited on April 23, 2008 at 12:53 AM. Reason : ^^^]That's me with a little stick of TNT that I rigged with det cord. The next pic is a bunch of them duct taped together (all of the det cord is unnecessary--we could've just rigged one of them--or two to be really sure--but we rigged them all just for practice). the 3rd pic is the blast from those, at least as best as I could capture it in a single still image.[Edited on April 23, 2008 at 12:58 AM. Yeah, I was similarly surprised by the numbers. As you say, though, it does make sense. TNT works better as explosive, while petroleum makes a superior fuel.Cool TNT pics.
