Anyone know if there is something similar to U Woods or U Oaks/Pirates Cove around Wilmington? My bro is starting in the fall, and we are looking for something in the 350/month range in the mold of the 4br/4ba things that are all over Raleigh. Personal opinions are appreciated as we know nothing about the area. Thanks

Unless your brother is over 20 years-old or has special considerations, he should live in the dorm.

Even if he has three buddies he's ready to get an apartment with, they should all live in the dorm and expand their network.

Just get an off-campus parking spot for his car.

He is starting at Cape Fear in the roundabout program where he is guaranteed a spot in UNCW after 2 years of a certain GPA, so dorm isn't an option. I agree that would be the best though.

I moved from UNCW two years back after living there for 2 years I can tell you this....

At UNCW now only freshman are guaranteed housing (others are assigned as available) since they just boosted enrollment big time. This change occurred only a few semesters ago and when it did rents skyrocketed in Wilmington because of the surge of students that needed to start looking for housing.

Unfortunately, there are none of the 4 bedroom quad-style "per bedroom" lease apartments in Wilmington like there are here in Raleigh. I looked at almost every apartment complex within a 5 mile radius of UNCW, they are pretty much all lousy and approximately the same price.

I can tell you where NOT to live if you want to PM me... believe it or not about half of the apartments in the student district don't have central air (summers are pretty killer and winters can be rough with a window unit too...) When I went to Cape Fear almost all the students lived on South College Road rather than downtown because thats not really a good place to live (crime, gangs, noise, etc...)

Directly behind Best Buy there is a very nice apartment complex named "Clear Run" http://clearrunapts.com/intro.asp which are some of the newest units in the area. There is a new phase and an older phase but both are well kept, nicely priced and the best part.. very short walking distance to UNCW, Best Buy, Lowe's Foods + shopping center, Gold's Gym, etc... If I were to move back to Wilmington I would almost definitely stay there or at Mayfaire (most likely way out of your price range... rents in $1500+ a month range)

Only issue is that the apartment is in someone's name...not like per room here in Raleigh.

the best place to live in wilmington is nowhere near uncw

take a look at still meadow village on s. college near monkey junction

the apartments are nice, management is awesome, and the rents are fairly cheap.

also there are some pretty decent places off of 17th extention - i forgot the name of the road but it's the first left when you turn onto 17th from s. college at that walgreens/food lion intersection

the majority of the apartments near uncw (off of racine drive behind best buy/lowes foods/cici's) all suck

I agree. I know a kid who got an apartment first year and he has like no friends. you meet so many people when you live in the dorms.

Look at some of the apartments near Monkey Junction. Most places prices arent too bad, plus it would be a pretty easy drive to Cape Fear, going straight down Carolina Beach Road, or using 17th st. extension, depending on location.

kerr avenue runs parallel to new centre/s. college and there are many apartment complexes behind there - go behind goodwill and PTs and dicks and what used to be swensens, that's where i'm talking about.

you're talking about new centre/racine. racine runs behind best buy and heads straight to uncw. that's where the aformentioned clear run is

Live somewhere feasible. I lived in galloway (freshman year) Suite R (2nd year) the QUADS (3rd year) and a random house/Mill Creek my last year there. Throw in the summers at galloway and there you have it. of all those they ALL suck compared to the living arrangments we can find in Raleigh. Mill creek is right off randall...whenever he gets into uncw he can take the shuttles and right now he could drive the 2 miles to cfcc. might advice to you honestly are these so you can meet UNCW and CFCC people and have a great time and be feasible driving.

so on topic, i toured campus walk and it seemed alright but small, good because it's really close to campus. as far as i could tell there aren't any u woods type places in the area, but i was looking for a 1 br so i might have skipped those places.

Campus Edge is about the equivalent to living in the projects of Wilmington. There is a only a small percentage of students that actually live there. It is mainly older people with little to no income. I worked at a restaurant right behind the complex, and I was never allowed to go to my car alone past 9pm. Too dangerous. Full of drugs and who knows what other problems.

for a 1 bedroom i'd say check out wimbledon. i didn't get to tour when i went in, but the office staff was super nice and it seems like more of a professional crowd than students. also doesn't have the word college, campus, or university in the name so that's promising.

I know that Abbotts Run is going to be opening new "luxury apartments" in the summer that can be rented by room. I am not completely sure on the pricing, but I would imagine it is in the $400 range.

Market St/Kerr is a good location if you are looking to go to either of the CFCC campuses (downtown & airport).

Yea, a big negative on Campus Edge! Majority or robberies/assaults that UNCW reports happen on Racine Dr. where Campus Edge is located.

If you are looking for a one bedroom, I used to live at Birchwood, which can be a bit pricey but overall are excellent and very very quiet.

clear run is fucking terrible. I lived there for two years. I hear they are under new management, could be different now though.

I live at the reserves at forest hills. good place. I'm paying 450 a month. All utilities included.

S 8th and N 7th street is pretty much downtown. It is sketchy and not many college kids live on those streets. Mostly houses for rent on those streets. Only bonus i could see is walking to bars and walking back home. Could be worth it.


Just reiterate what I said a few months ago:

-Do not live at clear run apartments.

-I lived in The Reserves at Forest Hills - great place, great neighbors. Crime was low, rent was good (450$ all inclusive package). Definitely check into their all inclusive packages. Once divided by 3 people, it's not bad (water, cable, internet, etc)

-Pretty much every apartment within the "5 mile radius" is garbage. Rent a house if your going to live in the 5 mile. AND if you live within the 5 mile radius you CANNOT park on campus. the reserves is right outside the 5 mile so you can drive.

-Live on campus if you can. I missed out of that whole networking thing, but i hear its worth it.

-Eat at the south college sandwich deli.

The neighborhoods between Independence, Oleander, and College are pretty good. There are some apartment complexes and decent houses around Alderman Elementary/Roland Grise/Hoggard. Should take 10-15 minutes max to get to UNCW from these places.
