Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7809http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/435780/Toshiba-Widescreen-Notebook-Computer-With-AMD/VS.Sony Vaio VGN-NR285E/Shttp://www.amazon.com/Sony-VGN-NR285E-Processor-Premium-Granite/dp/B000ZOVE1K(I just grabbed the first two links I saw)there don't really appear to be many differencesthe major ones I can think of are that the Toshiba has a 17 inch screen versus the 15 inch of the Sony, and the Toshiba has a built in webcamand if I'm not mistaken, the Toshiba is 2.0 GHz versus the 1.66 GHz of the SonyThe Toshiba is also 80 dollars cheaper (Sony for 679, Toshiba for 599)my roomie seems to think the Toshiba might overheat more often than the Sonywhat do you computer cats think?I would have posted this in Tech Talkbut I didn'tpersonally I think the Sony looks cooler

wow, I had no idea the Toshiba would be so popular so farso let's seenegatives to Sony: battery life, break down alot?I mean, there had to be a reason the Sony is more expensive - maybe just cause they want more money, lol

first bought a toshiba in summer of 06, and it made it thru a year in the desert, its now at home chillin. current toshiba has lasted this second year of the desert, and even though it came with vista, it was relatively easy to find xp drivers for all the hardware and it runs great. toshiba laptops ftw. as long as they keep it up, I'll probably buy a new one every so often.
4/19/2008 11:17:35 AM
well, based on the overwhelming majority of users who recommended Toshiba, I went out and got it at office depot - going to pick it up at 5 or soif anyone can find any helpful reviews on it that'd be coolotherwise, I appreciate your help TWWlolz

4/19/2008 1:04:19 PM
I would have to agree that toshiba SUCKS. My dad does outsourced corporate IT work, and by far the worst machines on the market are toshiba. Acer makes better machines than them. You need to check out a Thinkpads, then HP business class machines, then probably a Sony.
4/19/2008 1:09:46 PM
well damnI guess I should have waited on everyone's input before I made the purchaseoh well
4/19/2008 1:58:15 PM

4/19/2008 11:27:32 PM
toshiba no questions.. sony's are pretty notorious for needing repairs.. ask anyone who has ever worked tech support.

Buy a Sony if you want it to give you problems with proprietary software bullshit (personal experience)

4/20/2008 9:14:13 AM
whatever you do... do not ever buy an hp or sony laptop unless you don't care if it goes bad the day after the warranty runs out, or before. sony is really awesome for having defective parts and then running out of replacements for everyone when they get 25 thousand rmas on the same day, resulting in a week or month-long wait for a new part.
4/20/2008 9:18:22 AM

4/20/2008 3:40:05 PM

I love my Sony Vaio. With the exception of my battery life slowly deteriorating...I haven't had any problems with it for three years (and it pretty much stays on 24/7).One vote for Sony.
