okay, so, quick question.

this is my room. it's fairly large.

i'm gonna go buy a couple more of those wire shelving units because i love them and they're very functional + cheap + look halfways decent. my LCD + receiver + tivo + etc. (on #2), along with various other things (on #1 and #3) will go on these - i have a TV stand centered on the staircase wall right now and it just looks too "empty"

these are what i'm talking about:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=71473-80752-184874B&lpage=none

draw your attention to #1, #2, and #3

my question is:

which would look better? #1 and #3 as 5-shelf units with #2 as a 3-shelf unit (all attached to one another)

-or-

#1 and #3 as 3-shelf units with #2 as a 5-shelf unit (again, all attached)

i can't decide.

behind them, there is a ~4' wall parallel to the staircase, just fyi.

what would tww do?

go with the 3-5-3 set-up, unless you're going to put a lot of stuff on #1-#3 then go with the 5-3-5

3-5-3 is more practical unless you have a shit-ton of things to put on them

3-5-3 will look like a middle finger

it will be more balanced with a 5-3-5 set-up

wouldn't it look a little strange tho? idk...

i'm just thinking of most entertainment center type units i've seen in the past, and they've had tall stuff on the outsides w/ the tv in the center on a shorter shelf

ugh

decisions decisions

and they're not ghetto, they're postmodern!

haha, i know they're ghetto, but i'd rather drop $100 for some shelves than $500 on a nice entertainment center for my damn bedroom

technically, a 5-3-5 is most like an entertainment center but you're doing it with wire shelves so it's not going to be the same.

do the 3-5-3 and laugh everytime someone comes over because you're indiscreetly flipping them off!

I don't really see why you're going to different sized shelves, I don't think it will look that good...Especially with racks that wide. Last I check, entertainment centers were uniform in height. If you're going for a TV stand in the middle, then get that, a TV stand. Just a box that matches the rest of the room and the wire shelving to put in between the racks.

A 3-5-3 will look stupid if you're putting your TV on the 5. With a 5-3-5 (as in, 3 height for the TV stand) you get the TV on top of the stand/rack that will bring up the height of this shorter piece to be closer to the 5 racks, and so your system will have a more balanced look.

Just make sure nothing falls over the 4' wall into the stairwell, haha.

i was going to put a shelf at the top of the 3 to sort of even it out

kinda hard to describe

the shelves are 36" wide

and what's funny about putting electronics on wire shelving? lawl

[Edited on April 18, 2008 at 12:52 PM. Reason : honestly, they look a whole lot better than you'd think, otherwise i wouldn't use them]

just the fact that you don't want to spend a lot of money on the shelving when you already bought an LCD and TiVo, which are both fairly expensive if I'm not mistaken.

well, yeah... they were

i just don't see the point in paying $500-$600 for an entertainment center when i could have the functional equivalent for much less

i'm not cheap, but i don't like to waste money
