I started martial arts again about a month ago after not doing it for 11 years.

And while I'm definitely getting in shape as far as cardio, I'm not feeling like I'm losing the desired body mass.

Any suggestions?

Do you think this shit works?
http://www.nowloss.com/lose-weight-fast.htm#fat-burners

I mean, instead of buying some magic weight loss pill bs, I'd just drink straight-up green tea. But does the rest sound legit?

start lifting weights in conjuction with your cardio if you dont already and eat a lean protein rich diet with a moderate amount of carbs, dont eat a ton of carbs with dinner or after, cook your own meals

throw in some weight training with it, especially big compound movements like squats, deads, benchpress, pull-ups (which you'll be doing shit tons of in crossfit, anyway).

eat a decent diet

I haven't had a beer in two days. And that was at the baseball game.

I don't think I want to weight train, I'm pretty built already; it's just the extra weight around the waist that's the problem -- as marko noted, the beer gut.

Yes, and what are the two key things you need to put on muscle besides exercise?
That's right...Calories and protein.
What is one thing you have to cut in order to lose weight? Calories.

Putting on muscle to lose weight is like going around your elbow to get to your thumb. It's just dumb. You'll get better gains by cutting weight and building muscle in different intervals. Something like 8 weeks of weight loss followed by 4 weeks of muscle gain might be good to start.

eat lots of chicken and drink only water. do martial arts and run. do weight lifting.

in high school i droped 40lbs in a two months by runing 2 miles and using a bike for about 20miles of low resistance cardio 5 days a week.

but yeah, diet is key.

get up early and run.

then run later in the after noon.

run run run

or if you like to do other cardio then do that. but IMO everything else is kinda boring.

unless you can join some sort of cardio class at a gym, now they get you movin.

For the record, a pound of muscle burns about 35 calories per day at rest. 10 pounds of muscle really can make a difference in the metabolic equation and cause weight loss in people who might otherwise be break even. If you need to lose weight you don't start by building muscle though.

I'm getting quite a bit of cardio through martial arts.

I think I'm just going to have to start using the elliptical during my lunch break at work in addition to the m.a., and somehow change my diet drastically.

Any of the people who have suggested a high protein diet:
Do you have meal suggestions? I'm seriously clueless.

The key of all of these plans is that you stick to it.

Quote :

Yeah, that won't work. Changing your diet slowly is a better option so that you're more inclined to keep to it. Going from eating burgers and pizza one week and then adopting a plan of eating salad every day for every meal is going to last about one week. Eating smarter, yes, so smaller portions of fatty food and starting to eat healthier options is good.

A complete and instantaneous overhaul? Unless you have electroshock treatment for whenever you go near a burger, you will have better success just amending your current behavior.

I've found that working out a little bit in the morning can help for people who are sedentary for most of the day. Even if it's just a few sets of pushups to get the blood flowing it's better than nothing. It's good to get your metabolism up and it'll stay there for hours even though you might just be sitting at your desk.

Yeah, working little exercises like pushups into your day that you normally never do is a good idea. My good friend (somewhere between 200 and 300 lb) is starting to work out when he got out benched by a string bean guy so I've started working out with him. He gets a lot of good results from doing push ups and situps and can feel the difference.

RawWulf, you can do some research here

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/forumdisplay.php?s=e99027e93db303c774d66c7f36496723&f=16

This forum is obviously for body building and working out, but this section deals with weightloss. It should have some good info to get you started rather than the bits and pieces you will hear here.

and you add two 170 cal special K protien bars plus a >500 calorie dinner and you'll lose it quick. I lost 13 lbs in a month from that.

Oh, also go to the gym and do cardio and build muscle, you'll burn even more calories.

the person who said "water and diet soda" had it wrong. Don't drink ANY soda. period.

Here's the trick. Eat less. Exercise more. Drink more water. Drink no soda. And don't think about lbs as a measurement. Think about clothing sizes.

just make sure you are doing something substantial everyday of the work week, and allow yourself free will on weekends mixed with somethin like hiking

im doin the same thing you are doin and in three weeks i have went from 239 to right now 223-225

the gauge i use to see how much weight i have lost is when i step on the scale monday after non regulated habits of the weekend, to me it is a much more accurate and necessary assessment of progress

i am trying to get to within arond 5-8 pounds of 205 by june 9th so i can cut to that weight if i have to, so i am gonna probably maintain for awhile without doing anything too extreme

what i do is after work on mondays wednesdays I lift sets of whatever and in between those sets i do 30 pushups 30 free squats and 30 situps, i do 2 exercises (3 sets of 20 reps each) and some random core workout in between them so that means 8 sets of the pushups/situps/free squats (probably once a month i increase the number of pushups/situps/squats by 5 still keeping them at 8 sets) on tuesday and thursday i run on the treadmill, right now 22 minutes but i increase by the minute every week on friday I do the run and the weight training routine to finish the week

THEN on monday tuesday wednesday and thursday after that i go to the Gym to train submission grappling, jiu jitsu, kickboxing and muay thai for an hour and a half to two and a half hours, the past 2 weeks i have been doing these classes in a sweat shirt

during the week i am counting calories and making sure that i have consumed less than i have burned on DESIGNATED EXERCISES...i dont even count the calories i burn at work, metabolically, or walkin i dont limit the kinds of foods i eat just the amount of calories, like i said before durin the weekends i pig the fuck out so that i dont cheat durin the week and my metabolism takes care of those two days of splurging

on weekends or friday ill go on a hike at umstead or somethin

the point is weight trainign is great and the way i do it isnt to build muscle but to condition myself to fight at a high level as long as possible

and keep a diary, of all that shit (except weekends) itll keep you honest and you can pick out your mistakes slowly and correct them as you go

word, thanks man.

I appreciate all the advice in thread.

I wouldn't say I'm a fat slob; but I'm definitely not where I want to be. Right now I weight 235 and I'd like to drop to 200. Like I've said, I'm pretty built from the chest up, it's just my mid-section that's the issue.

But I'll definitely adjust my daily routine based on the suggestions in this thread.
