it's simply a show of the liberal swing at power of it's citizens

and the only dissenting vote was a republican: Philip Isley

"[City officials] acknowledged last week, however, that their opinion was based on empirical evidence and not on scientific research. Meanwhile, a Purdue University food science professor told the council that grease and fats – not food scraps – congeal in sewer lines to cause overflows."

And they observed this how? Let that be a lesson to you, gentlemen: Assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

This was on GoGoRaleigh.com

"By the way, a mayor in the area wrote this to a friend a couple of weeks ago:

“Good examples of current hysteria involving the political ‘green agenda’. I saw Koopman’s quote in the paper and I was thinking the same as you!! I think what has happened with the Raleigh City Council is very analogous with the national political scene. Frenzy for ‘change’ — any change — don’t worry about details, just scream you’re for ‘change’ and the gullible will follow. Those Raleigh folks who voted for the current council are certainly getting their fill of change! I hope they enjoy it.”"

I don't doubt disposals really do clog sewers, I just don't care.

what the fuck is Raleigh's problem? It's like they decided about 7-8 years ago to try to be worse than Cary.

more like "how it would be measured," amirite?

Shit, I had already set up a warehouse and front corporation to smuggle disposals in from Cary.

I think it is more about money than the environment.

You guys should care what you put down your drains/disposals. We had to replace our pipes last year because of all the gunk that had built up. Granted, our plumbing was old (and terra cotta pipes), but it would back up into the bathtub the water could not make it to the sewer. Cost: $1500. Our sewer was also upgraded two years ago by the City and cost a tax payers a fortune.

I think this is a good idea with all the development that is going on, especially with all the new development and condos. It will preserve what the City is spending to improve the sewer systems and prevent very expensive problems 50 years from now. I could see where food scraps could lead to problems as the pipes age and more people tap into the same sewer systems.

^ Do you have a disposal? If so, feel free to surrender it to the proper authorities.

i think if the city council had thought this through at all, they would have funded a study to see the proposed impact of a disposal ban. and then if it turned out that a ban was a good idea, then make the ban part of a larger plan that might include education about composting, etc.

great another way for them to waste money.......

There are like less than 10 municipalities in the US that have them banned, I would think that should be evidence enough right there.
