depends on the quality of the fish, of course... some fish is not free of micro-organism even while it's fresh, but it depends on what your stomach is used to.

the only thing you have to worry about is allergies and food born illness. Other than that it is one the healthiest things for a person to eat.

A lot of it is not healthy at all. California rolls can be an example. I'll try to find some evidence to back that statement up, but a lot of it is pretty high in calories.

not if you have a shitload of carb-laden rice with it like most people do

size 14 fat ass girls all like "Oh, Becky, lets eat healthy !" so they get thin strips of fish on top of huge mounds of white rice

Even without the rice, eating two or three full rolls can be really bad.

Here, read this: http://www.fitsugar.com/314740

Look at the tempura (fried) stuff.

Unfortunately, that's what most people eat when they go out for sushi; so it is very relevant.

^^I was gonna say that

I think true sushi is, but a lot of people forget they get all these sauces (eel sauce, spicy mayo, wassabi sauce, etc) and that is what truely makes sushi not that good for you.

I agree. Most whole grains are going to be high in calories because they pack a lot of energy along with their other nourishment. You have to take in calories and fat to be healthy and they are a great way to get your calories. The fact that they are high in calories means that you have to practice somewhat strict moderation though and keep in mind that you're getting a lot of nourishment for a small volume of food.

There is all types of rice though. White rice versus brown rice. Steamed versus fried. Bowl of rice versus side of rice. It makes all the difference in the world.

Well I kind of figured eating the grease laden deep fried breadded apptizer would not really help cut the calories.

I guess what I am getting at is I found a grocery store on the way to my job that has pretty good sushi that I can run in and grab quickly. I really struggle with eating healthy because I am always running late and love fried food and burgers. If I have something halfway healthy around to snack on at work I am less likely to leave here starving and hit up Mcdonalds, Sonic, or Cook Out on the way home.

I wish I could go for lunch. Costs me $60 every time we go for dinner. Granted, that's only on rare occasions and I'm usually picking up a few drinks and appetizers. Two could probably eat for $35 if it was just dinner.

I try to switch it up when I go for lunch...Sometimes I will get the yummy fried rice and a couple pieces of sushi, or just do all sushi.

I like to make my own sushi but all I can get around raleigh for sashimi grade is tuna. I heard if I freeze salmon for 7 days it'll be sashimi grade, but then I read that the temperature to freeze must be really really low to kill the bacteria. it sucks

yea youre definitely factoring in a lot of drinks and appetizers. My GF and i LOVE that place and I dont think we have ever spent over 30 at dinner. Granted we dont ever get alcohol or appetizers there. But we leave stuffed for under 30 easy every time.

I make it at home. More fish, less rice. Very good, very cheap, and good for you. Nori is good for you too. I love to cook chicken with furikake and teriyaki.

sushi also means sticky rice and not necessarily raw fish so I guess it could get really fatty depending on what you put in it and how you cook it.

The fish quality has to be really good and don't get the stuff with the crap in it, for example, the mayonnaise and what not.

here are some of the possible ingredients and their healthiness level:

[note, i am talking about nutrition here, not hygiene... so if fish is contaminated, that's another issue]

fish (and other seafood): very healthy. healthiest would be salmon.
rice: the sticky white kind, NO.
land and sea vegetables: very healthy (avocado, seaweed, carrot, onion, etc)
fatty, sticky sauces: NO

so, the moral of the story is: eat sashimi.

and have you looked at their activity levels?

how about you look at chinese and japanese kids under the age of 15 today. they have obesity rates several times those of previous generations.

Meh, I'd say rice is pretty neutral.

Not the most healthful food out there, of course, but provides energy and a little protein.

It's a staple.
