So yesterday I was in the Cary Public Library doing some homework, when suddenly I hear this "Vroom! Vroom!" I look up, and it's this little Asian kid sitting at one of the computers. Every 30 seconds he goes "Vroooom!" really loud. We're in the library, mind you. He must've been 11 or 12.

After about 10 more minutes of this, I get up and walk over to him. "Hey kid," I say. "This is a library. You're supposed to be quiet in here. You don't need to be going 'Vroom! Vroom!' all the time."

Then this Asian lady, clearly his mother, looks up at me evilly and says "Excuse me. My son is autistic and we have special permission to be here."

"Oh, my bad" I say, and walk back to my seat, ashamed to be alive.

But I still don't think that you should be allowed to let your autistic children chill at the library unless you can shut them the fuck up.

shit, im almost 27 and i still go vroom vroom in the library

that reminds me about being in chick-fil-a yesterday. it was kids night and the giant cow came out to walk around and wave to the kids. there was this autistic kid chasing the cow around yelling 'moo' all the time. i could tell the cow was getting pissed off, but he couldn't do anything. the cow even went behind the counter, and the kid chased him back there

haha, some girl tried to call me out in class the other day only to have it backfire on her.

Me raising my hand to ask a question while we are reviewing for a test: "This test is going to be mostly vocabulary right?"
Teacher: "Yes"
Bitch: "I just asked that question, you have asked every single question I've asked today!"
Me: "Oh my bad, I don't listen to you most the time"
Bitch: "Don't worry hun, I tune you out on a daily basis anyway"
Me: "Well maybe you shouldn't, I've gotten better test grades than you all semester, it might be beneficial to you to listen to what I add to the discussion in class"
Bitch: "ugg that doesn't mean anything!"
class: "laff"

Ouch!

But seriously, the Cary Public Library may as well be the Cary Children's Library. It's usually full of children because Cary is stay at home mom central and they always have something going on for the munchkins. It's probably the last place that I would try to do homework.

I was agreeing with you.

I don't think these people are looking at the bigger picture when they say that autistic children shouldn't be allowed in libraies.

yeah, autistic =/= dumb, I've known smart autistic kids and they should be allowed to check out books 'n stuff
but they shouldn't be allowed to hang out unless they can keep their autism in check

^
truth...they simply don't mature

oh. hahaha. oopsy. i'll just be quiet now.

wait i'm confused...it isn't that autistic people simply don't mature. i mean maybe they don't mature normally but you can be autistic and not act like a 5 year old. sometimes they just don't develop correct social habits and stuff. like isn't that what aspergers is---a really high functioning form of autism? the people just don't understand social cues or something? no? i don't know.

One of my staff guides was taking a bunch of kids down the Nantahala. They went under a low tree limb and all of them but one ducked and he took tree to the face. The guide said "hey kid, why didn't you duck, lol?" The kid replied "because I'm blind, asshole."

There is still so much unknown about autism, that makes it much harder to overcome.

Many kids with autism also have ADHD which make it even harder to function regularly with them.
This past summer I worked with a boy who was autistic and had ADHD, he had to constantly be stimulated mentally in order to keep him focused on things. Otherwise he would end up walking off, hitting other kids, or hitting himself. When we were having quiet times he couldn't stand it and would have to randomly make loud noises and distrubt the group so that could come back to where everyone else was. It was like his mind would go so far off that in order for him to snap back to reality he had to do something to get people to focus on him.

I was trying to work, in a place where it's supposed to be quiet

little kid going "Vroom vroom!" makes it hard to work, and disturbs quiet

I find it slightly annoying that the mother does not shut her kid up

accordingly I try to rectify matters

lots of bad shit happened to me in my childhood, actually...thanks for asking. but I told the little kid to shut up because he was making it impossible to work

Borrow books, maybe? Use the computer while his mother borrows books? There is a huge spectrum of functionality within autism, from severely debilitating forms of the condition all the way to relatively high-functioning individuals (like Asperger's). As has been said, autism != dumb. In fact, there are a lot of autistic savants who have amazing abilities in one or two specific areas (think Rain Man, for example).

no, you told him to shut up because you're fucked up in the head.

a normal person would realize its a kid, and kids are loud (autistic or not) and move to a more quiet area. or if they really needed the quiet, they would have talked to the parent and said "i'm trying to work, could you please have timmy quiet down a little"

no normal person would jump on a little kid and be like OMFG STUPID SHIT SHUT THE FUCK UP

wow dude that's pretty bad ass that you can read my mind like that, and discern my motives better than I can

and I didn't jump on him, I called him out courteously as he deserved...12 is old enough to know that you shouldn't be loud in a library

I never claimed to be a normal person, either

you're a textbook case of a jackass losing an argument and picking at a few words to keep the argument going.

you're taking a quote out of context to make it look like i'm coming out of nowhere with that observation, but if you read the whole thing it's very obvious that i stated how a normal sane person would handle it

therefore, you're not sane. its not hard to grasp.

You claimed that I called this kid out because I am fucked up in the head/experienced trauma as a child.

I claim that I called this kid out because he was making it impossible to work, and had no right to be loud in the library.

That's the argument

Who do you think has better knowledge about my motives, you or me?

That's all I have to say, man...if you want to keep it up, be my guest

I got called out like that a while ago...

Was sitting in the parking lot at the grocery store and the lady beside me is loading groceries in the back of her SUV. When she gets done she pushes the cart to the passenger side rear of the vehicle, grabs her purse, and goes around to the drivers door. Since we were parked on a slope and it was hellaciously windy I didn't feel bad at all about saying "I really think you need to put that cart up before you leave so you don't damage anyone's car." That's when she snapped on me and told me she was just coming to put her purse in the car.

I still think she was full of shit though and I wasn't rude with what I said or my tone of voice; so I decided pretty quickly not to worry about it.

She looked so mad as she pushed her cart to the cart return.

This cunt at lowe's said something to me one time when I was detoxing from two days of drinking. It was like mid afternoon. My head is throbbing. My fingers were twitching. I felt like death.

We pile out of the truck and a mountain dew can hits the ground and rolls away. I was in no condition for swift movements so I just ignored it. She came around her volvo and was like "excuse me did you see that can?" in the most snob cary cunt woman voice ever. I just fucking stared at her while another guy I was with picked up the can and put it in back of the truck.

Her and her husband walked all the way to the door in front of Lowes. Then her husband looks back at us (still standing by the truck eating taco bell) and walks all the way back over there. Starts the volvo, and moves it to the other side of the parking lot.

I bet the whole time he was thinking how his wife is a dumb cunt and cant keep her mouth shut.

The funny thing is I was not even gonna fuck with her car. If anything I would have just stuck the can under their wipers. I don't fuck with other peoples shit. It was just hilarious how they had to move their volvo because she would not shut the fuck up and we was still standing out there.

The Cary Public Library has a quiet study room, if you're overly concerned about quiet than make use of that.

If you are looking for quiet the CPL is probably not your best bet, it is very small and the computers, as you have apparently learned, are not separated into children's computers and adult computers.

I don't see a huge problem with asking the kid to be quiet if you were nice about it and said please, otherwise you're just rude.

p.s. Use earplugs for complete quiet, that's what I do, because there is always some asshole making noise, and most of the time it's an adult.
