Who do you see for what?Whats the difference between a therapist and a psychologist and a psychiatrist?Have any of you visited them before and were they helpful or are they quacks?

Most psychiatrists are in bed with pharmaceutical companies and are more than willing to prescribe you shit you probably don't need.
4/9/2008 5:50:15 PM
are you serious?
4/9/2008 5:51:22 PM
Go see for yourself.

Basically I have issues with guilt, depression, and compulsive lying. I don't know if I just need to talk to someone or if I need to be medicated.
4/9/2008 5:54:09 PM
I would recommend ExTenZe.
4/9/2008 5:54:46 PM
Second that. I'm using it and a certain part of my male anatomy is bigger.
4/9/2008 5:57:36 PM
Most therapists don't have the doctors degree to prescribe meds.
4/9/2008 6:34:59 PM
I don't think any therapists do.
4/9/2008 6:38:57 PM
i believe ive seen psychiatrists that do therapy. the ole dual guns of talking and pillin' you know. most of the clinics ive been to just have you see 2 diff ppl though.
4/9/2008 7:10:35 PM
go to a psychiatristdont take meds without supervision
4/9/2008 10:24:25 PM
There are therapiststhere are Psychologists there are Psychologists that can write scriptsthere are Psy.D'sThere are psychiatrists
4/9/2008 10:28:35 PM
you can also sometimes get meds thru your primary care physician. you usually have to start w/ them first anyway.
4/9/2008 10:29:31 PM
if you go to State, you can just go up to the Counseling Center on the 2nd floor of Student Health...they'll hook you up with some meds pretty cheapit's really humiliating, though, because you have to walk past everybody who's waiting for a prescription, and they all know where you're going
4/9/2008 10:31:47 PM
A therapist or psychologist cannot prescribe you meds. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who generally look for medical solutions to your problems and often believe there to be an organic medical reason for your 'mental problems.' They usually do not counsel other than what is necessary to diagnose and maintain your medication. They sometimes work in conjunction with a therapist or psychologist. A therapist tends to talk you through your problems and make real world suggestions so that you can better deal with whatever your issue happens to be.The distinction between a therapist and a psychologist is a little hazy, but I think that it may have to do with their background and qualifications.I'm an old hat when it comes to insomnia and anxiety, so I just go through my primary care physician or OB/GYN. If your problems are simple and organic, you may do just as well going through your doctor. [Edited on April 9, 2008 at 10:41 PM. Reason : primary care doc]

I've heard that these are all terrifically shitty jobsespecially psychiatristbecause you hear all this crazy shit, and you can't tell anyone about it
4/9/2008 10:39:04 PM
^^ In some states, they will let psychologists with a Ph.D. prescribe medicine.]
4/9/2008 10:40:47 PM
primary care doctors have no business diagnosing anxiety, ADD, or any of that stuff. i think that they should be able to prescribe something if you've already been diagnosed and they have proof of that -- but i don't think people should be able to just "get" xanax and adderall and ritalin and shit from their primary doc/2c
4/9/2008 10:51:20 PM
probably not. but you usually have to go thru them to get a referral to another doc anyway
4/9/2008 10:51:58 PM
i talk to myself in my head all the time
4/9/2008 10:52:48 PM

Man, this is getting more responses than when it was in the loungeand they're very helpfulpat yourself on the back wolfweb
4/9/2008 10:59:01 PM
I somewhat agree with jackleg. I do believe that primary care physicians should be allowed to diagnose and prescribe medication for psychiatric conditions. However, this is often abused and patients who need close and 'expert' management can slip through the cracks with tragic consequences.
4/9/2008 11:01:51 PM
i see a psychiatrist once a month.. sometimes more.find one that isn't solely a prescription writer, and one that resorts to prescriptions only after talk therapy.]
4/9/2008 11:03:28 PM
jackleg, as much as id like to agree, my pcp helped me out. the next psychiatrist appt at my clinic was like a month and a half away. my pcp got me in the next week and was able to help me out.
4/9/2008 11:06:16 PM
stay away from the pcp if you dont want mental problems...
4/9/2008 11:08:36 PM
I'm in like a mental panic mode latelyIDK what to do, and I have no idea if any relief is in sight, nor how to find out answersI don't really understand what's going onI *can* tell you that anti-depressants are bullshit psychiatrists ehhhhhh, they don't seem to care. they don't know me, what do they care?for real tho :3I'm not sure why it took me this long to realize how pointless I am and how pointless everything I do is, and why it's just hitting me harder this year than it ever hasand there's no point in me making this a "cry for help" because clearly I can't be helped lolin conclusion,

We cannot know his legendary headwith eyes like ripening fruit. And yet his torsois still suffused with brilliance from inside, like a lamp, in which his gaze, now turned to low, gleams in all its power. Otherwisethe curved breast could not dazzle you so, nor coulda smile run through the placid hips and thighsto that dark center where procreation flared.Otherwise this stone would seem defacedbeneath the translucent cascade of the shouldersand would not glisten like a wild beast's fur:would not, from all the borders of itself, burst like a star: for here there is no placethat does not see you. You must change your life.
