I'm a freshman and my knowledge of Raleigh extends only to about 500 feet off campus. I want to go biking somewhere this weekend, other than the greenway anyone have some good biking spots?

http://www.raleighnc.gov/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_109824_0_0_18/Capital_Area_Greenway_Map.pdfMost people don't realize it, but "THE GREENWAY" is one piece of a long interconnected network of trails. Most of them are much flatter than the one by the art museum. I would use caution on the ones in S.E. Raleigh. There's lots of broken glass and sketchy people. If you're female, don't go there. If you're a dude up for adventure, have fun.[Edited on April 8, 2008 at 5:45 PM. Reason : .]

^agreed. The greenway in SE Raleigh can be quite an adventure if the crackheads are walking the bike path. I feared for my life the only (and final) time I rode that trail.Reedy Creek Greenway is a nice paved trail...when I ride it I park at the Applebees on Hillsborough and take it all the way to Umstead Park (about 6-7 miles each way)...you can continue onto the gravel trails in Umstead if you have a mountain bikeLake Crabtree has a large network of single-track trails for mountain bikingLake Johnson kinda sucks for riding...there's too many people/dogs on the main path...however there's a little-used paved trail that branches off near the dam and runs all the way to Trailwood

I wasn't aware of how the greenway was connected. I'm on a mountain bike so i guess i'll go to lake crabtree...

For mountainbiking, go explore Crabtree this weekend if it's not raining. Almost all the local trails will be closed except Umstead if it's raining. Umstead is pretty much ALWAYS open. (Umstead is very flat, with gentle rolling hills and WIDE fine gravel trails.Crabtree has some decent singletrack if you dont want to drive too far away. You can park off of Old Reedy Creek Road and ride BOTH Crabtree AND Umstead by going either left or right basically.Harris lake is also a nice ride if you want to drive a little further. As far as riding road, I'd go to RTP/Morrisville and ride out there. There's usually less traffic on those backroads.

there are multiple daily group road rides in the area too if you have a road bikehttp://ncbikeclub.org/calendar/ncbc0408.htm

Stay off of roads unless you absolutely have to for transportation's sake. They're not made for recreational exercise.

^ you're not gonna do shit man, get out of a biking thread if all you're going to do is talk about how lame bikers are for using roads.

Women can't bike the greenway at night? Jesus titty-fucking Christ. Why not just tell me I'm going to get raped if I venture out of my castle without a male escort? All you need for night riding is some common sense, a helmet, lights, and preparation. Take a friend if you're nervous or scared, and learn how to fix a flat so you're not broken down on the greenway at night. Go to your local bike shop (All Star by Whole Foods, Flythe on Peace St., or Cycle Logic on Hillsborough) for a human being to give more commuting/recreational exercise advice. Also 1304 Bikes is your community bike project on Mayview Rd. Also, there are these older 'Bike Route #x' signs posted all around campus. I've found them to be pleasant to bike around for exercise. If you're scared of main roads, stick to biking downtown during the weekend, or do the Cameron Park and north of Hillsborough St. neighborhoods. Better yet, with what (^^^^^^?) said, find a more experienced buddy and bike around together. And, I can't wait for gas to go up to $5/gallon, while I enjoy the freedom, exercise, economic and health benefits a bicycle gives me, as well as self esteem and self-sufficiency I've gained from learning to maintain it. Sounds much better than being stuck fuming in a box for an hour on I-40, along with everyone else./rant

The bike path in SE Raleigh is no joke. I rode it last summer not knowing any better. There were some shady people walking the path in broad daylight. If I wasn't riding past them 20mph on a bike I'm sure they wouldn't have hesitated to pull some shit.

some "shady people walking in broad daylight"?i.e. you're scared of black people?

Who isn't? And with good reason.
