GIMP http://www.gimp.org/Probably the most popular free and open editor out there.Paint.NET http://www.getpaint.net/

^paint.net is probably the most robust free editing program i've used; isimple nterface, very similar to standard Paint, but it also has options for adding transparency and a magic wand tool very similar to the one found in photohsop.

meh there have been online solutions for editing for a while - i don't think it's as great as the adobe media/PR machine has made it out to be with everyone in the graphics blogs writing and raving about itwhen would you seriously use something like that? i'd rather have my 60mb portable photoshop cs3.exe on jump drive and do it that way if i had to

i guess i'd never use it - my needs are always a lot more than just the generic stuff they provide online.portable cs3 is pirated of course so it's free. unfortunately, adobe hasn't done something like that yet.
