My neighbor just bought a bunch of new plants for his backyard, and has been watering them with the hose. I'm not sure, but I think he's been watering his lawn too. I wouldn't complain usually, but I've seen him dragging the running hose around the yard (with no nozzle) on two occasions now, and his yard has been wet more than that. Should I say something? How can I report him without him knowing it was me?

Where do you live? I thought Raleigh was under Stage 1 again, which means you can water two days a week. We're also allowed to water with reclaimed water now.Edit: Okay, shit, we're still under Stage 2.
3/26/2008 7:45:43 AM
looks like they're talking about going to stage 1.5 when falls lake reaches 90% (whatever stage 1.5 is)http://www.raleighnc.gov/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_306_210_0_43/http%3B/pt03/DIG_Web_Content/news/public/News-PubAff-Council_Lays_Markers_For-20080318-17022010.html

yes, report him, especially since it hasn't been a one-time thing.

I'm simply stating the obvious:Water restrictions "levels" are similar to the maligned terror threat levels. The numbers and their corresponding colors are directly related to the paranoia and fear (albeit justified in some cases) of the public.btw, don't snitch on your neighbor.[Edited on March 26, 2008 at 8:15 AM. Reason : and fuck you, i do what i want.]

3/26/2008 8:21:11 AM
Nope, not on well water - we're pretty close to downtown. The whole neighborhood has city water.
3/26/2008 8:24:39 AM
SNITCHES GET STITCHES.
3/26/2008 8:26:58 AM
then snitch awaybut fyi . . . just because he is on city water doesn't mean he isn't using a well for irrigation. Lots of people had wells sunk this winter so they could water without restriction.
3/26/2008 8:27:38 AM
I'll check on that, then, before I do anything.I just don't want him to know it was me that said something.
3/26/2008 8:32:03 AM
why dont you be a good neighbor and approach him as such. ask him about his watering and ask him if he is aware of the watering restrictions. give him a chance to stop on his own before you report him.
3/26/2008 8:35:32 AM
It would be pretty much impossible to not know about the water restrictions. They are publicized everywhere. And if she does actually go up to him and ask him about it and he says, "Yes I know about them, but I don't care" then it's going to be extra obvious who reported him.
3/26/2008 8:44:43 AM
Dont snitch on him. Either talk to him directly, or put an anonymous note on his door asking that it stop (or you will report him). Its a bastardly thing to do to report someone watering their plants with a garden hose and cost them $1000. If he had an underground irrigation system, and was watering every day, then you might think about it. But dont be a douche. Or one day someone will be a douche to you.
3/26/2008 8:50:31 AM
no, it's a bastardly thing to do to water your lawn when we are in the middle of a drought. Yes, we got some rain a few weeks ago, but it would be very shortsighted to just declare the drought over and use water however we want to.

3/26/2008 9:09:41 AM
It's not like the guy is being a douche by intentionally breaking the law or anything ...
3/26/2008 9:28:43 AM
if you live in Cary, then your neighbor isn't doing anything wrong.

Raleigh's Water Restrictions Homepage http://tiny.cc/ClickHere453 look at the bottom of the page to report[Edited on March 26, 2008 at 9:41 AM. Reason : ]
3/26/2008 9:40:21 AM
Remember that the city folks have to catch them in the act of violating restrictions to do anything, so if he's got a schedule for this, include that.

3/26/2008 10:05:21 AM
sorry, some of us want to have water to drink and bathe with in the future.
3/26/2008 10:06:35 AM
well then it should be important enough to put some personal effort into, as opposed to a 'report first, ask questions later mentality'. Do you want the gov to police every aspect of your life?if she talked to the guy, and he was uncooperative about it, then by all means, report him....just don't be a pansy about it.
3/26/2008 10:15:21 AM
I would talk to the neighbor, but telling her to do the same isn't likely to make her: if she were willing to talk to him beforehand, she would have by now.As far as this nanny state business: if citizens would pro actively conserve their own damn resources, the government wouldn't have to step in to ensure future availability.

^^It's common knowledge that mature trees on a property add value to the land - you're not the only one with this preference. And never mind the savings in summer when part of your house is in the shade of trees
3/26/2008 10:33:10 AM
i'd maybe put a notice or print out of the restrictions in their mailbox, then if they keep watering i'd report them.
3/26/2008 10:38:41 AM
oh yeahi meant to add that we tend to really overestimate people, i am still surprised at how many completely ignorant and uniformed people i meetmaybe she simply doesn't know about the restrictions...
3/26/2008 11:04:34 AM
If their watering bothers you that much, report them.If it doesnt, dont report them.
3/26/2008 11:10:04 AM
That's about as likely as him not knowing what month it is, what city he lives in, or who is president.

3/26/2008 11:55:47 AM
^^ ass. Go talk to people and tell them you have an issue with what they're doing before you go rat them out. You probably could have convinced them to stop doing it, clean up what they'd already thrown into the bushes, and not cost them 100 bucks. If you actually make an effort to communicate in a civil way most people are pretty receptive and you can actually be neighbors.[Edited on March 26, 2008 at 11:56 AM. Reason : ^^]
3/26/2008 11:56:03 AM
^ i see no reason to start yet ANOTHER conversation with them...the first time i talked with them, it was about the pool of vomit they left on the ground (project from the third floor balcony) out where everyone walks their dogs (and picks up the poop, actually, so that our "lawn" remains nice)the SECOND time i talked with them, it was about the fact that they dumped their leftovers (spaghetti) off the same balcony into the grasshow many more chances should i give people who are obviously below me? i hope i get the chance to cost them hundreds of dollars in the long run, because i really hate it when people fuck up a nice thingglad you assumed i wasn't justified, though...i LOVE your sort of people, the ones that think they can fuck up over and over and over again and just get a laughable talk from a neighboroh, and i've had one car towed twice...i don't know who owns it, but they double park or park against the curb, and i've left them warning notes...i hope it cost them $texas
3/26/2008 12:00:06 PM
ahh. there's a history of discord with these people then...you didn't specify that. it's a totally different scenario than Tenacious C's
3/26/2008 12:07:43 PM
We are not in a water crisis any longer. I am not saying open up the taps and start watering every other day, but hand watering your lawn should NOT be an issue anymore.
3/26/2008 12:13:18 PM
3/26/2008 12:14:09 PM
for your situation, sounds like you have.
3/26/2008 12:17:49 PM
the whole "snitches get stitches" thing is just a front for self-insecurity. if you're confident in what you're doing, what the fuck do you care what people say about you? on the other hand, if you've got something to hide, then don't take the easy way out and point fingers when the shit hits the fan. take it like a man (*cough* whiny bear stearns employees *cough*)ACCOUNTABILITY, PEOPLE, DO YOU HAVE IT?
3/26/2008 12:18:00 PM
*grumble grumble* he's out there watering again...
3/27/2008 2:14:25 PM
go report it.
3/27/2008 2:25:16 PM
go do something about it. posting on here doesn't get anything accomplished.
3/27/2008 2:26:11 PM
Report his bitch-ass.
3/27/2008 2:31:06 PM
I'll come water your lawn cassie as for your neighbor, I dunno if I'd snitch on someone I had to live beside
3/27/2008 2:32:40 PM
take pictures and video of him watering with a time stamp. then go approach him and tell him that you have it on record that he is violating the water restrictions and then tell him to pay you $800 or you will report him which will result in a $1000 fine and profit!!
