So this mega-shitty radio station up here is doing this promotion, where they'll play the "game" between the two bands, play like an hour of songs from both, and accept texts for votes to score the matchup.the lineup is pretty shitty, but it's an interesting concept i thinkfill yours out, and perhaps we'll get some of the more knowledgeble posters to create new bracket stylesor perhaps this thread will be an epic failure.EITHER WAY

Why are Foo Fighters a #1 seed?
3/24/2008 9:17:59 PM
i told you it was shitty
3/24/2008 9:19:06 PM
nickelback - 3 seedthe rolling stones - 5 seedoknice topic for discussion, though
3/24/2008 9:23:43 PM
yeah, i'd rather someone redo the seeds and bands.
3/24/2008 9:24:22 PM
Man you know the 00s suck when Nickelback is a 3 seed
3/24/2008 9:24:28 PM
my final four: Queen (tough choice between them and Lynyrd Skynyrd), Guns&Roses, Green Day, and Nickelbackfeel free to flame. I prefer country music person to rock, but I enjoy the music from those bands occasionally.
3/24/2008 9:30:34 PM
I'm calling Coldplay with that infamous 12-5 upset.
3/24/2008 9:32:13 PM
^^well, you just announced to the internets that you are a douchebag with a terrible taste in musiccongrats![Edited on March 24, 2008 at 9:32 PM. Reason : !]

There's so much wrong with that bracket, I don't have time to go through it all.But why are The Doors considered 70s music? Why are Black Sabbath a 10 seed? Clapton 13? Smashing Pumpkins 12? Live? They couldn't think of 16 bands from the 90s better than Live? The fucking Hooters? And that entire 2000s bracket is absolutely terrible.I feel bad for anyone who actually listens to this radio station. Also, someone hook them up with a graphics program that's better than MS Paint.

3/25/2008 7:47:13 AM
haha WOW at the bands on there lol
3/25/2008 7:58:23 AM
SeetherKillersBreaking BenjaminDisturbedwho/what are these bands?
3/25/2008 8:02:09 AM
don't mind that, its just music that the normal person listens to...
3/25/2008 8:09:20 AM
I saw an article in the Observer here about a bracket style battle but it was for One Hit Wonders of different decades. Thought it was pretty interesting. But ^that up there is just terrible
3/25/2008 8:09:53 AM
3/25/2008 8:13:41 AM
90% of the 90s, 00s bands wouldnt make my CBItheres too many bands to effectively do something like this regardless though
3/25/2008 8:23:39 AM
I will sayPearl Jam as the #1 seed for the 90s works.(bands that can be considered) 90s bands worth switching out for some, if only to de-grungify and de-sublime/green day/offspring-ify the list:RadioheadWilcoPavementBlurTribe Called QuestBuilt to SpillREMSonic Youth (or 80s)OutkastFlaming Lips (push to 00s)PhishWeen
3/25/2008 8:36:21 AM
maybe if they narrowed it down to a certain decade or genrebut this doesnt really worksounds like some shitty thing 96 rock would do, btw
3/25/2008 8:37:29 AM
my 90s list would be ginormous, id have a hard time narrowing it down to 16 i think
3/25/2008 8:44:38 AM
built to spill #1
3/25/2008 9:30:23 AM
that bracket is so shit it's not even worth discussing
3/25/2008 9:50:26 AM
then make one that's not.i like the concept a lot, just not the execution.

i agree with mdalston's list even if a few of the groups i wasnt huge on, they all deserve to be considered over most the groups on the radio station's list. Foo Fighters if being considered need to be in the 90s imo. Their 3 best albums came out in the 90s. Their 2000+ selves wouldnt be considered. Other 90s groups that should definitely be considered:FugaziHumSunny Day Real EstateDeftonesBotchConverge (although JD came out in 2001 and is arguably their best)At the Drive InThere are plenty of other smaller bands that were huge for me but the ones I just listed were bands that I feel like are very well known/influential bands from the era amongst music fans.[Edited on March 25, 2008 at 10:22 AM. 3/25/2008 10:19:18 AM
Fugazi and the Deftones MIGHT make the list...but those others... 90% of people have no idea who the hell that is... and a commercial radio station's idea is to appeal to the broadest demographic (18-49 year olds). That said, it's a purely mass appeal business decision to include these bands.I'm not picking on you specifically, though... Overall, you have to take this for what it is. but the fact that Nirvana ISN'T the #1 seed in the 90s is frankly a little strange.
3/25/2008 10:29:31 AM
no worries, i understand that what im looking for is not what a 2008 radio station is looking for in this kind of competition. my bands were more of if someone was doing a competition on here or something.
3/25/2008 10:33:51 AM
Fuck Fugazi, descendants ftw
3/25/2008 10:44:06 AM
all you fucking idiots just fill out a sheet the way it is and then we'll create a new onewe all know Jimi died in 1970and that music in the 00s sucks assand pavement should have been on thereand so should any other obscure band you hold on to dearlybut for the love of god, just fill it out the way it is and we will have fun
3/25/2008 11:35:08 AM
guns and roses at 6? anyway, i would hate to make choices in the 80s bracket, with Metallica, GnR, Rush, and Ozzy all in the same bracket (where is Black Sabbath?)90s and 00s are pretty easy though
3/25/2008 11:50:40 AM
BUT THERE IS NO PANTERA
3/25/2008 11:52:27 AM
this was hard. some of the games were painful. (especially 00s) because of how terrible both choices were. other times the first round matchups they picked were better than nearly all the other teams in the bracket (ie incubus and white stripes, either one of them would have walked away with the bottom part of the 00s probably). some of them are just hard to pick between, how do you compare REM and Van Halen? The result was Van Halen getting too many technicals for physical fighting amongst their own team and REM won on default.i was inconsistent too in how i picked them because it was hard to be even remotely serious with this thing. some was who i liked, some was who i thought influenced more bands and some were upsets meaning i actually liked the other band better . i personally would pick ozzy over tom petty anyday but i gave Tom the upset for fun.Im going to cheat and list:QueenSmashing PumpkinsU2Foo Fighters in that order from the final 4 even though it couldnt happen that way.did i mention this was a painful excercise?[Edited on March 25, 2008 at 11:57 AM. i'm not even going to explain how much this bracket sucks, because that would be redundant.how does a band win a round? people text in their votes? is it unlimited votes? i want to test my vague knowledge of mainstream music and fill it out the way an average radio listener would.
3/25/2008 12:13:52 PM
i could see the average radio listener today having linkin park all the way
3/25/2008 12:14:42 PM
3/25/2008 12:30:05 PM
and in the 00s bracket you had no choice but to chose either the Foo Fighters or Audioslave. Has mainstream music really sucked that much in the past 8 years?
3/25/2008 12:34:57 PM
on that bracket, the white stripes should beat anyone in the 00sfoo fighters haven't been relevant (or good) in over a decade
3/25/2008 12:51:44 PM
i swear 4-5 of those bands in the 00's are the same/use same musicians
3/25/2008 12:53:54 PM
ok here's my mainstream rock music station listener bracket. i have zeppelin winning as a hope, but i have a terrible feeling that nickelback would take it all. i based most of my matches on who has the most hit radio rock songs. so here it is:
3/25/2008 12:54:04 PM
3/25/2008 12:56:58 PM
prolly cause you're a badass with a heart of gold
3/25/2008 12:57:48 PM
^^^Would that be the zombie hendrix raising hell in the 70s bracket for you? ShamefulAlso CalledtoArms, that is the worst possible bracket imaginable. Its like a permutation was created to find awful, and your bracket was the result. You've got Bob Marley taking the stones, and Queen beating Pink Floyd and LZ. And thats just the beginningNutsmackr has some kind of sense in his picks, I think his is somewhat arguable, except for the whole Ramones taking out LZ, the boss, and clapton [Edited on March 25, 2008 at 1:01 PM. ^x6 yea but since they only have them, FF, in one (i would have put them in the 90s) I took their whole career. Im not a big white stripes fan but I would have had them as one of the last 3 bands (FF, Incubus, White Stripes) had they not faced Incubus in the first round. Despite Incubus getting lumped into the nu metal genre, they have some great creative jazz influenced guitarwork and musicianship as a whole on their first several albums...all of which (except for one 2001 album) came out in the 1990s though...another band who shouldnt be in the 2000s heh[Edited on March 25, 2008 at 1:03 PM.
