Don't they usually run gas changes at night, so you usually don't see it unless you're out there in the evening.

no. the price they pay from the gas company changes each night. they can change the price of gas whenever they want. probably changed in the morning the most though.

Seriously I knew it would be something as obvious as that - I just found it strange that I have never seen them do it before. Since I've started commuting 45 minutes every day its given me a lot of time to think about things such as that.
