you had never heard "All the way"?and sick and ill seem like pretty universal (or at least national) terms...not really colloquialisms
3/21/2008 12:33:29 PM

3/21/2008 12:43:35 PM
i think you people are swaying more towards basic slang than colloquialism
3/21/2008 12:45:59 PM

I"m from Prince George's County, Maryland, where it's 32% black, 32% hispanic, 32% white, and 6% Asian. We have no identity. We just steal it from everybody else's.And the ill thing was a horrible example. I just happened to be illin' to some Beastie Boys and getting some sick air on Tony Hawk.
3/21/2008 12:52:59 PM
the ONLY (variation) word that i hear in maryland/dc that i have NEVER heard anywhere is DUG (they pronounce DOG as DUG). thats the most unique colloquialism i know of.
3/21/2008 12:53:06 PM

3/21/2008 12:53:44 PM
the Yoopers have an interesting dialect in Michigan and Wisconsinhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yooper_dialectGullah is another interesting dialect in the Low Country of Georgia and South Carolinathe High Tiders are another example
3/21/2008 12:57:42 PM
colloquialisms differ from dialectsthough they are frequently involved with one another
3/21/2008 12:58:20 PM
3/21/2008 12:59:12 PM
colloquialisms are what make dialects.

3/21/2008 1:06:13 PM
you're not wrongbut I'm more right than you dialects are defined by their vocabulary and grammar, surecolloquialisms are results of thatbut dialects are also defined by their phonology[Edited on March 21, 2008 at 1:07 PM. Reason : -]
