Dudetake some friends and charge them.zorthage and I did this last summer. Rented a place for a week (couldn't find anything decent that was small enough for two people), and then asked for something like $40/night from friends. fuck, my folks came to visit.I think we hit the ABC store three times in one week
3/19/2008 9:26:58 PM
$1000??? lol. you should've just camped man.
3/19/2008 9:28:10 PM

3/19/2008 9:37:59 PM
Definately charge (a night, or for the whole time). You can recoop most of the costs, and that will make that vacation affordable for friends as well.
3/19/2008 11:16:35 PM
im not looking to make money, afterall if i was still with her id be out $1000 plus extras like food and suchi think im just gonna ask for like $50 per person plus community meals
3/19/2008 11:22:17 PM

^ ggI think it is kind of tasteless to invite your friends and then charge them because you broke up with your girlfriend. I'd invite them and ask them to help out if they can, but just let them reap the windfall of your bad judgement. If they aren't cheapskates either, they'll throw something in to help you out.
3/20/2008 5:54:32 AM
i fail to see the correlation between me possibly being a cheapskate and losing $300 with a nonrefundable deposit. its $300. and id have nothing to show for it. also i dont personally think its tasteless to charge my friends, especially if its $50 for the week. let me know where you can stay sound front for a week for $50 and ill make it free.
3/20/2008 7:27:40 AM
It would be tasteless for his friends not to pay something. It would be different if we were all wealthy adults, but college students don't normally drop $1K a time on their friends. One of the best parts about doing these things is that the cost isn't so bad when you split it up amongst your friends.[Edited on March 20, 2008 at 7:53 AM. Reason : s]

I think you're first problem is leaving a wide open question to the likes of TWW. If you didnt want people to comment freely you shouldn't have asked. The way I see it, You knew you had a deposit of 300 when you booked the house so if for some reason something horrible happened and you couldn't make it you'd loose the money anyway. As far as charging people its really up to the friends but i wouldn't focus on salvaging some lost cash rather focus on a good time.

Be sure to test all the smoke detectors--seriously.

I could stay ocean-front in a 3,000 SF home - FREE OF CHARGE. When I take friends, I don't make them pay, nor do I charge them for gas.

So here is the breakdown:You cancel: -You lose $300 -You lose a vacationYou go and friends pay $500 total: -You lose $500 (or less if they pay more) -You gain a vacation with your friends. You go and friends dont pay: -You lose $1000 -You gain a vacation with your friends.I mean, those are your 3 choices.Personally, I would tell my friends i was going, then see if any of them wanted to come and mention it would be awesome if anyone wanted to chip in on the house, or pay for the booze or food or whatever, but it wasnt required.Youll have some friends that will be cheapskates, and youll have some friends that will throw in.

Some of you guys have some free-loading friends.I can't fathom going to spend a week in the Outerbanks at a nice place and not paying an equal share for room and board...whether it was asked for or not.
3/20/2008 9:58:17 AM
wolfmarsh ftw
3/20/2008 2:21:04 PM
i dont think i have any friends that would not WANT to pay, so by setting the amount at $50 im making it very reasonable and im avoiding a scenario where each person asks how much the house costs and then tries to give me more than someone else might, if two people come with me and i have to pay 90% then so be it, we'll still have funalso, i chose the island, i chose the house, i chose the dates so i don't think its fair to charge anymore than what i am because it's pretty much a vacation they had no say in planning and it's my mistake we're trying to turn into a fun week

If I may, I work out here with vacation rental homes...There are a couple of ways out of the cancelation penalty, depending on your circumstances. What company did you rent through?Did you receive the lease prior to making any payments, or did you put the $ down and then receive the lease?Have you returned the signed lease yet?The reason I ask is that they don't have any legal claim to your funds unless you have either:a)paid any monies after receiving the leaseb)returned the signed leaseIf you have, you''re most likely screwed and will have to eat the cancelation penalty. They may let you move the reservation to a different date (i.e if you want to bring family instead, a new gf, whatever).Secondly, on taking friends:You need to read the lease language and see what it says with respect to non-family groups (NFGs). Most companies have a non-family group policy, and if they catch you in violation of the lease, you will be evicted under the NC Vacation Rental Act's expedited eviction clause (its in chapter 42 of the NC general statutes, I think). If you have given them an email address that ends in .edu, you're probably already flagged as a potential nfg and they'll be watching the property pretty closely during your stay. You'll want to make sure you don't have a bunch of cars at the property as well. Overcrowding is the biggest tell-tale sign of an nfg and they'll enter the premisis based on the overcrowding to evict you. Also, you'll want to remove/conceal any affiliation with school (ncsu stickers on the back windshield glass, parking permit hanging from the rearview, etc.), as they look for that too. Finally, and this kind of goes with out saying: Don't be stupid and make enough noise to draw attention to yourself. One complaining phone call and you'll be booted.Basically, If you plan to bring friends, mind your manners and stay off the radar, and you'll be fine.
3/20/2008 5:47:37 PM
they took money out as soon as i faxed the signed leaseand as far as NFGs, as far as they'll know we are one and it will be pretty hard for them to prove otherwise with my plan

I mean, Im sure you're a smart guy and all, but remember that these are small-town locals who've been doing this for a long time, and they'll have little else to do that time of year...plus booting some tourist who thought he was smarter than he actually was makes for a good story around the moonshine. And I would make sure you understand their definition of family groups so you don't get caught looking dumb with some cliche' phrase like, "That guy is my cousin, so we qualify as a family group."That said, good luck to you sir.
