I've only totally disagreed with one thing that my pastor has said. I think I'm pretty lucky to have pastors that are pretty laid back with the way they put out their opinion on things.

Althought one pastor I had a long time ago, back when columbine happened I asked him what he would said if someone was going to shoot him if he said he believed in God. He told me that he would say he didn't believe in God and save his life. He also said that if someone held a gun to his wife's head and asked the same thing he would say that he did believe in God. I didn't agree with that, not at all.

^^I didn't really get the moral of that story...he continued to talk to me afterwards but I remember that I kinda zoned him out cause at that point I was sitting there thinking that if my last action was my professing my faith in God would be the ultimate sacrifice.

But a few years later, I kinda think I saw what he meant...based on the whole, you're saved by grace alone and not by your actions that you might could pull it off with out really denoucing God...you could totally be like "NO I DO NOT BELIEVE" and then in your head finish with "that God does not exsist"

It was a guest pastor's comment that implied that evolution and the idea of the creation of the universe by a higher power were mutually exclusive.

I mean, I always looked at it as this: If god designed this world, then there's no reason why he couldn't have designed all these little systems that allow the world to function and improve upon itself as time goes on and the planet changes.

You are basically listening to things being said by somebody who is a mortal, who cannot know the full truth that god Himself would know. I wouldn't consider it shocking or novel that people disagree with their pastors sometimes.

That whole thing just doesn't make sense. Even if he made the argument that he could bring more souls to God alive, who would follow him after a statement like that? I would think he'd be out of a job pretty quickly. As far as being saved by grace and not by our actions, one of the conditions of grace is faith and I think a public denouncement thereof would make things a little bit hairy at the Judgment.

Yeah, that's probably the argument that my pastor was making when I zoned out.

Since technically you are saved by grace alone, saying a lie to save your life wouldn't send you straight to hell. I think overall it's what you really believe in your heart, and if you really do accept and believe then what does it matter that you lie on the outside.

no. i'm just trying to figure out why somebody who professes to believe in a diety that can do whatever he wants, would deny such a being in the very moment when his faith was put to the test.
