Tiger or the Celtics?

Seriously?

The Celtics are having a pretty good year, doing something that is done every year in the NBA (and usually in the more competitive conference) and Tiger is undefeated in a sport where it impossible to go undefeated (albeit not always against A+ #1 competition).

Tough call...depends on which argument you like better, the team or individual:

Individual argument:

Tiger's run is more impressive because if he messes up just once, then the streak is over (which I don't necessarily agree with to a certain extent because he messed up for 3/4 of the tournament this past week and still won). If T-Mac has a bad game (like this Sunday against the Lakers), then the Rockets can still win if other players pick it up (like Alston's 31 points against the Lakers).



Team argument:

The Rockets run is more impressive because the whole team has to play well as a team for every game during the streak. With Tiger, he only has to control one variable...himself. If Tiger plays his B-game, then he should win every tournament. And he can even play his C-game and still win if other people fuck up.


Its almost a toss-up. I want to say Tiger just because I think it is really difficult to play that well in golf over a long period of time. However, I think the Rockets run is pretty impressive because of how they had played earlier in the season (people forget that they were under .500 almost 40 games into the season. And the fact that they are doing it without Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady isn't exactly putting up 60 a game (although he is playing exceptionally well).

Kudos to both...but I'll probably go with Tiger by a hair.

^^against your team argument, Tiger is also playing against 100 or more of the best golfers in the world every week. In basketball you're only playing against one team at a time. I don't really disagree with anything you said though.

Its the Rockets. Tiger has had a streak like this, 5 straight wins, once before, and think even a third time before. What the Rockets are doing has only been done once before like 30 years ago.

How can you say Tigers is more impressive when he has done the exact same thing before?

Well obviously. The Rockets play a lot more games. They will play 5 times or so before Tigers next tourney ends, and if he skips next week, it could be 10 games to Tigers one. A lot more chances for The Rockets to lose.

I've been around scratch for about 4 years, and I'll tell you that my swing breaks down WITHIN rounds. I can rarely keep my game at a high level for more than one or two rounds, let alone during a tournament or even just when I need to be good for a gambling match or something. When I shoot 65, I'm more likely to shoot 75 the next day than I am to shoot in the 60's again. Tiger plays 4 rounds every tournament, and I'd say shooting 66 on tour is as hard if not harder than winning one NBA game. So really his streak of 5 wins is like winning 20 in a row in my book. I don't think anyone has won that many in a row in a long time. Tiger has done it before, can you think of the last person to do it before him?

Well also, Tiger is picking and choosing his tournaments also. He hasn't actually played in every tournament this year, just the ones he wants to. Its like saying the Rockets will only play the teams they want to play, and skip the others.

I agree that Tigers streak is damn impressive, but he has had 2 streaks longer than this before. 6 wins and 7 wins. Tiger can have a bad round and still win. See his even par round this past tourney. And yes, for Tiger, I consider even par a bad round. If the Rockets have a bad game, they are most likely going to lose.

Either way, IMO I think 22 wins is way more impressive just because it has only been done once before in the history of the NBA. In Tigers case, there are 4 streaks longer than his current one with the top being 11. And yes, i am aware of 2 of those streaks being help by Tiger himself. The 22 wins by the Rockets is obviously the more rare of the 2 streaks in question.

^good point, but consider 2 things.
1. Tiger plays in fewer tournaments, but he also plays in tournaments on tougher courses with deeper fields.
2. Nobody wins 2 pga tour events in a row, let alone 5, 6, 7, whatever his is. 5 game winning streaks in the NBA happen to a lot of teams every year. Tiger wins 2 in a row all the time, because he's tiger, but nobody since Jack has been that good, and even Jack couldn't put together tiger like winning streaks.

seriously though, considering the level tiger plays at

how many of those golfers are actually playing at a competitive level relative to him

who was the golfer that played with him the other week or maybe a month ago that said there were two tournaments going on

the one he was playing, and the one tiger was in (paraphrased)



i think the rockets are more impressive at this point given how their team has coalesced after Yao's injury


that said, Tiger is much more likely to remain consistent going out, but right now, it's pretty fucking impressive winning 22 games in a row

^thats more a credit to how dominant tiger is than to how bad the field is. The field today is stronger than it has ever been, yet tiger keeps winning. Im not saying the rockets streak isnt impressive...quite the opposite actually. I'm just saying both of them are on the same level.

You can really argue this in so many different ways.

I guess I think its just harder to win a golf tournament than it is to win a basketball game. But I do think if the Rockets get past this next murderous week, then them winning 26 or 27 straight games is more impressive then Tiger's current streak.

But if the Rockets take it to say...30 games and maybe Tiger's streak ends at 10...then its close to a wash...but I still go with Tiger.

The Rockets are doing this without their 2nd best player who is a top center in the league.

Their streak is the 2nd longest in NBA history.

Where does Tigers rank? Maybe that would be more perspective.

Tiger's streak is the 5th best streak ever.

Sam Snead had...I think 11 straight wins. Tiger has had 6 and 7 win streaks (his 7 win streak was last year). And Ben Hogan has had a 6 win streak.

And as I posted, Tiger isn't playing every PGA event, just the ones he wants to. So he has skipped multiple tourneys during his streak.

He often skips tourneys because he is mentally drained and needs to rest.


The Rockets have to play against every single opponent no matter how tired or worn out they are. Imagine them just coming out and saying "Yeah we aren't gonna play the Jazz tonight, we are just too tired. We are gonna rest for a few days and then play again when we feel like it"

the only people that play in every tournament are the people that need the 44th place paycheck each week to survive, even then, those guys don't play in every tournament

22 games in a row in the nba is pretty damn impressive though, where you do have to be on top of your game night in and night out to accomplish that b/c of the level of skill of each team, even the bad ones

But the thing is there are so many good golfers on the tour these days, that if tiger does slip up, there is someone there that has a lot of talent that can beat him

Last week for instance, Tiger had to drain a 30 footer on 18 to beat Bart Bryant

I think its hard to judge between the two streaks because Tiger doing what he'd doing doesn't surprise you that much

If the Jordan/Pippen Bulls won 22 in a row you'd be impressed, but not incredibly surpised either



But with a team like the Rockets doing it, especially half of it without Yao, its more surprising

It would be like if someone like Jim Furyk won 5 tournaments in a row

Both really good teams/player, but not who you'd expect this kind of streak from

True, it would't matter if we were comparing Tiger to other golfers. But we aren't, we are comparing him to an NBA team, who doesn't get to pick and choose opponents and skip the smaller matchups to rest for the bigger games.

And Tiger could have missed that 25ft putt on Sunday and still won in a playoff. So making it wasn't a win/lose situation.

5 wins on the PGA tour has been done more times than 22 wins. Therefore the 22 wins in a row is obviously the more rare occurance. Therefore, to me atleast, its more impressive. And its even more impressive considering almost half the wins have been without one of their top 2 players.
