It can be done! This engine shell:

http://www.doomsdayhq.com

takes the .WAD files from the original games including Doom 1,2,Ultimate,and Final as well as Heretic, Hexen, and Hexen 2, and renders them in full OpenGL or Direct3D glory. They play extremely smooth and look fantastic (considering what they are).

The engine is free. The .WAD files can be obtained be the...procurement method of your choice.
