I've tried AVG, Sophos, and McAfee and I can't get them to run on my machine. They all say, sorry ____ doesn't currently support Vista.Goddamn Microsoft.

what about the one ncsu gives out? that one supports vista
3/16/2008 5:49:42 PM
I'm not a student at NCSU anymore.

http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3Arootkit&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-ayou want a rootkit or antivirus software?
3/16/2008 5:55:51 PM
i assumed virus protection....yo that file is easy...brb
3/16/2008 5:57:38 PM
I should have specified anti-rookit. A program to detect the bot programs that the standard anti-virus doesn't pick up. I don't have any reason to suspect that my comp is part of a bot network, but I'd like to err on the safe side.
3/16/2008 5:59:33 PM
so do you want symantec?
3/16/2008 6:11:00 PM
Where is it coming from? Maybe?
3/16/2008 6:12:44 PM
its the vista32 version of symantec...one sec
3/16/2008 6:14:43 PM
^ Josh, I hope you're not providing the NCSU version of SAV to someone that's not affiliated with the University.
3/16/2008 7:34:34 PM
yeah, you're not allowed to do that I guess. I could swear I remember that when I was in school students could give the antivirus software to friends/family.
3/16/2008 8:02:40 PM
^ Nope. We provide it to students, faculty and staff only. If that happens to be a "family-use" computer, that's fine. If it's a friend or someone that's graduated, or a family member that you don't live with, then it's not okay.

Anyone else have input on a free anti-rootkit program?
3/16/2008 8:10:47 PM
i didnt send it to him i promise
3/16/2008 8:15:13 PM
NCSU should give free anti-virus to alums. God knows i get more requests for money now than i did when i was actually IN school.
3/16/2008 8:16:04 PM
looks like AVG may have an on-demand anti-rootkit program available for free:http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-rootkit/us/frt/0also, since you have Vista, do you have Windows Defender running on your machine? it's pretty good at catching some things.what are the symptoms that you're experiencing that lead you to believe that you have a rootkit?[Edited on March 16, 2008 at 8:18 PM. Reason : ^ no]
3/16/2008 8:17:53 PM
why are you so hardcore "no one can get antivirus but students"?
3/16/2008 8:28:10 PM
I've found that Spybot + Spysweeper trial (with the option to sweep for rootkits turned on) get most things
3/16/2008 8:28:56 PM
^^ it's my job to keep an eye on it. nothing personal.
3/16/2008 8:30:58 PM
If I were to still use the XP version from when I was a student, will it ever expire? And yea, I wouldn't mind getting upgrades for free, seeing how many requests I get for money and how much I actually I donate to NCSU every year as an alum.]
3/16/2008 8:31:16 PM
^ technically, you're supposed to uninstall the product once you've graduated. and no, we're not going out of our way to track that, unless it's blatant abuse.it's not possible for us to write a contract with an antivirus vendor to provide antivirus for free to alumni, unfortunately. we have to pay per person, and that comes directly from student fees. and alumni fees never go towards general IT, so that's just not an option.[Edited on March 16, 2008 at 8:36 PM.
