whenever airplanes fly over really low i always get scared

but did it take off of a treadmill?

My parent's house is a waypoint for the planes at Cherry Point to get on final approach. We constantly have low flying harriers, prowlers, and C-130s over the house. If the Blue Angels are in town, they're flying over it too.
3/11/2008 10:40:37 PM
I used to work at a summer camp under the Cherry Point approach pattern. Those guys would come in very low and very loud at all hours of the day.

The Wal-Mart in North Charleston is in the landing pattern for the Air Force Globemasters.
3/11/2008 10:47:16 PM
ever stay on/around an airforce base?i lived on Edwards AFB for two summers, and commercial planes hold nothing to Jets doing flyby's and sonic booms every day
3/11/2008 10:47:52 PM
I was riding past Miramar when an F-18 Hornet was landing and was at NAS Pensacola when the Blue Angels came back from an air show and landed after a low pass.
3/11/2008 10:54:05 PM
^ Were you on a motorcycle? If so I would expect you to look over and do the Maverick scream as it passed you.

I was in the back seat of a Chevy Malibu unfortunately.

was it like this loud:
3/11/2008 11:11:44 PM
i'm a goldsboro native. seymour johnson air force base is there for those who don't know. we got so used to teachers stopping for 15 seconds or so when planes flew over and then resuming that we hardly took notice. we got a new student in 3rd grade. it was monday and she had just moved to goldsboro that weekend. she fucking freaked when a plane flew over on her first day. thought it was a tornado or something. the rest of the class was all "wtf mate?"
3/11/2008 11:19:14 PM
No b/c it was landing, the Blue Angels were louder b/c they did a low pass before they landed, but not that loud.
3/11/2008 11:19:22 PM
man this shit is so disturbing. these airplanes seem like they're really low. definitely low/close enough that you can hear them coming and going, and when they're overhead you can feel the house shake. but it takes about 15 minutes to drive to the airport from here, i don't get why they fly so low. i was thinking maybe there was another airport that i dont know about.. but even if there were a small airport nearby, i lived less than a mile from a small one near fuquay and those tiny planes hardly make any noise. these are either military or passenger planes. no way its one of those tiny little planes that people do stunts with at the small airports. whatever they are, i'd love to know why they fly so fucking low. it scares the hell out of me cause it makes no sense. every time one passes, i feel like something is about to crash into my house. no way they fly that low all the way to PTI. are there other airports in greensboro? or a top secret area 51? ANYTHING TO MAKE SENSE OF THE AIRPLANES!!!1 ttyl thx ok l8r

I <3 airplanesGoing to ^^s is a trip in and of itself just because of all the airplanes. And the night where there were lots of planes coming in totally made up for how badly The Big Lebowski sucked.
3/12/2008 10:22:13 PM
I cant look at an airplane (gun or motorcycle for that matter) without making some sound effects
3/12/2008 10:24:50 PM
^^ Christine likes to criticize movies she's never seen because she was running around the house like a schoolgirl on crack laced extacy every time an airplane flew over.
3/12/2008 10:51:58 PM
it was funny to see her POUNCE off the couch every time a plane could be heard
3/12/2008 10:52:36 PM
catlike, if you will.^^^ If I'm running I'll sometimes make car noises to motivate me, and pretend like I'm shifting when I pass people. I'm so lame [Edited on March 12, 2008 at 10:55 PM. Reason : ]

i really dont understand why so many airplanes would be so low over my house. shouldnt they be within a few miles of the runway before they come down to 500-1000 feet? well i guess i dont know how low it is exactly, i suck with guessing. but they are low. like they cant just stay that low forever
3/12/2008 10:56:19 PM
^^lol...i hear ya...that is pretty funny..i do the same thing...and sometimes when walking with friends and theres some dirt on the side walk ill run over it making dirt bike noises and try to rooster tail some dirt up on em...straight knuckle draggin shit...ya know?
3/12/2008 10:59:33 PM
^^, ^^^Fuck yall. I'd estimate that movie to suck even harder if I hadn't been distracted in a manner that kept me in a good mood.

^^^ she never misses an opportunity to alienate herself from that crowd ^x6 yup. Its entertaining to me, but it gets on everyone elses nerves. If I'm just messing around running on a track with friends I'll pretend to get loose and slide into the "wall". I really don't like running so I've got to make it as entertaining as I can. ]

shawna i dont really mind the airplane as much as the fact that this just started recently (except for around this time last year), and i dont live near an airportso it seems really out of place and kind of freaks me out. its like why is that plane so low, its gonna crash.

Actually, my family just started noticing more planes flying in sort of "near" our house. We live off of GC, near Jamestown & Adams Farm. Weird.
3/12/2008 11:41:10 PM
im thinking this new plane traffic is from skybus, but it still doesnt all make sense (read if you care)i was actually home during the day for a while today, and i heard one and went outside to look for it... and it was a skybus. skybus is always advertising new destinations and stuff, so maybe there are new flight paths opening up that take the planes in places they didnt go beforelike i also saw a kinda low plane going overhead today while driving near my house. it was flying from south to north. and i just checked to see how far PTI is from here. according to google maps, its an 8 mile drive. 7 miles as the crow flies. and its exactly due west (270) from here. so i think the one i saw today had to come out of the airport, go southeast, then gradually turn back to the north. it definitely couldnt be on its way to landto people who know: how far out is 7 miles, in terms of airplanes and how high/low they should be? at what distance do you start the landing process? and how long would you stay at low altitude once taking off?
3/18/2008 9:53:24 PM
4000-6000 ft AGL
3/18/2008 9:57:28 PM
aaaah, i forgot about skybus being in greensboro now.
3/18/2008 10:22:36 PM
4000-6000 feet at 7 miles out? lets pretend its 4000. how low is that, i'm a terrible judge of distance. can you hear a jet engine from a mile away? i feel like its gotta be closer than thatand i just heard another. whats that site that shows you the live data on airplanes, maybe i can find one thats coming overhead
3/18/2008 10:27:12 PM
flightaware?
3/18/2008 10:29:04 PM
4000 ft is pretty far, it is almost a mile

Airshow soon? We have 3 f18a's flying over wilmington super low and in formation.
3/18/2008 10:34:48 PM
3/18/2008 10:41:54 PM
At about 7 NM out the planes will be only about 2000-3000 feet AGL on a standard 3 degree glideslope. They can tend to be pretty loud from that low.And as for planes departing, I did some research on KGSO out of sheer boredom/vague interest and the Baynes Two Departure looks to go right over the area you mentioned. That could be your answer.[Edited on March 18, 2008 at 11:08 PM. Reason : moar]

cool, thanks for looking that up. couple questions:i dont know how to convert this shit.... can you help me with that part? http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0802/00178BAYNES.PDFit says it goes at 80 degrees to one spot (36° 8.06N, 79° 29.87W), then turns and heads at 41 degrees toward south bostondoes 36° 8.06N, 79° 29.87W convert to 36° 8.06', -79° 29.87'and what is the baynes 2 departure? i mean i see what it is, but how much is it used, and why would it be used? it makes sense though if i have the right coordinate, cause the line from the airport to there goes almost exactly over my house. it says that the baynes 2 just changed recently too. but i dont know what it is!]
3/18/2008 11:45:16 PM
Baynes 2, without looking at it, sounds like a SID (Standard Instrument Departure)it's just what the name implies--when taking off, aircraft will often be cleared for a SID (and the pilots will have all of this stuff in their navigation and approach charts)it allows air traffic to be routed in a way that deconflicts with noise sensitive areas, landing approaches, etc, and it is a standard thing (instead of saying "upon takeoff, fly runway heading up to 2000', then climbing right turn to 130, leveling at 4000' until 5 miles, then climbing left turn to 060 up to 8000'. They can just say "Cleared to Chicago via Baynes 2 then flight planned route", and everyone will know what to do without having to copy it down (and often read it back over the radio).SIDs are generally only used at large, busy airports. It's basically just a way of organizing air traffic to something manageable, and it's nice for convenience and brevity in terms of them telling you what to do. [Edited on March 19, 2008 at 12:09 AM. ok i think i have it figured out. and if they go on a straight line flight path at 80 degrees and head for the first turn, then that line really does go right over my house. and they actually follow that line when they fly over.thats wild. so however high they would be in about 6-7 miles is i guess still low enough to hear.
