Wouldn't campus alerts be more useful if they actually gave a more detailed description of the criminal including ethnicity.A man 6' wearing dark clothing is not very descriptive. Of course if they said 6' african american male we would have the NAACP crying that campus police is being racist and just trying to alienate minorities.

because you know its a black guy, they dont need to tell you

don't you guys get a little nervous about the fact that there was another armed robbery on campus? ....i'm probably the only one who does.... but still. i get a little more freaked out every time they send out one of these campus alerts.
3/11/2008 9:02:13 AM
good thing they don't have that pesky student patrol anymore!
3/11/2008 9:34:01 AM
^^ 1 armed robbery on a campus of 30,000 students != time to panic
3/11/2008 9:42:25 AM
i noticed the change a couple years ago. doesn't make much sense to send out alerts if you're not going to include ethnicity
3/11/2008 9:48:12 AM
^^ I think she's talking about how often we're receiving messages like these... it happened to one of my sorority sisters a few years back when she was leaving the library. It's just the type of thing that you wish didn't happen so frequently around campus. But really, what more can you do other than remember an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of a cure. (I.E. - Walk in pairs/groups, be aware of your surroundings, etc.)[Edited on March 11, 2008 at 9:49 AM. Reason : ^]

create a law making it illegal to eat peanuts cause you might choke on one
3/11/2008 12:07:30 PM
How do you know the guy was African-American now?
3/11/2008 12:10:52 PM
well you indirectly prove my point ^by not including race b.c of fear of being racially insensitive many may automatically assume the suspect was black even if the suspect were asian/mexican/or white.
3/11/2008 1:42:52 PM
Speaking of campus alerts...
3/11/2008 7:04:11 PM
3/11/2008 7:12:57 PM
two robberies in two days...hmmthat's not cool
3/11/2008 7:18:18 PM
This is not cool at all, and I'm going to be on campus late tomorrow night
3/11/2008 7:26:53 PM
yeah, i knowusually I have no problem going anywhere at any hournow I feel like I have to worry...
3/11/2008 7:28:40 PM
guess those new segways they got arent helping as much as they thought
3/11/2008 7:31:43 PM
3/11/2008 7:31:56 PM
It works, so why not use it when something is actually happening rather then just keep testing it out all the time when nothing is going on.
3/11/2008 7:36:30 PM
I'd rather know about it than walk or drive around campus not knowing an armed guy is out there.A culture of fear is necessary when there's something to be feared, I think.
3/11/2008 8:02:28 PM
the alert today says black males... i would assume if ethnicity or whatever other details are known, they'll be given
3/11/2008 9:15:18 PM
^ Ditto.I can imagine they wanted to have more details before putting 30,000+ people on alert, but dang, if this had been a year ago I would have been heading to my car on Centennial campus right about that time. I would have liked to know ahead of time that I should be aware of something like that...I'd rather they be over-zealous in protecting my safety, rather than waiting too long to announce something. Point being, if the suspects weren't in custody, we should have all been on alert. Not known about it via email after 7pm.Note: I had a friend IM me about it at 5pm b/c she got the alert from WRAL.com. Check out the blog and how many students were asking for details there. Seems like social networking is the true winning medium for notifying folks of incidents to be aware of!http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/2557221/
3/11/2008 9:18:30 PM
That's pretty ballsy robbing someone at 5pm. I know somebody saw something.
3/11/2008 9:25:49 PM
There's a lot going on around here. This girl I work with, she was on spring break in Mexico, she lives by campus, her house was broken into by a handyman her landlord hired, and her roommate's car and her car were stolen, as well as all of her school books and notebooks and stuff. Her car they think was sold for drug money, her roommate's was found with them smoking ounces of pot in it. NC should rethink its policies about concealed carry, I think. I'm feeling a lot less safe by the day.
3/11/2008 10:30:15 PM
The WRAL article I posted above was updated at ~11:30pm with more info regarding a rash of robberies at College Inn, etc.Sounds like it's time for Concealed Campus to open up a chapter (or a good ol' fashioned can of whoop ass) at NCSU...
3/12/2008 12:36:13 AM
^a bunch of states are considering this, but most students walking around aren't 21.
3/12/2008 12:42:36 AM
Well, somebody included the race of the suspects in this alert:
3/12/2008 2:52:17 AM
Yeah it was posted already.I wonder how much the cops actually patrol and use the camera systems in place in the area if somebody can get robbed in broad daylight AND the perpetrators can get away.Gay little crimes of opportunity, but hey at least they aren't killing their victims. They point a gun at you, you lose whatever you've got in your wallet, you tell the cops who don't give a flying fuck, and you go buy a gun about a month later and CAN'T WAIT to use it on somebody.
3/12/2008 3:07:06 AM
^ Oops--you're right. Didn't see it.Well, the thugs obviously don't have any real fear of Campus Police. Patrols seem to have been increased, though.
3/12/2008 3:10:55 AM
I dunno why they would have any fear of campus police. You hardly ever see the guys at all. The cops I see most often are the horse cops chilling outside of Talley. I rarely see any others.Actually I did see one cop who used to stop by the Bookstore a lot to say hey to us, kinda wandered by every couple weeks or so.I should see a cop more often than that, though. I thought that was the whole point of patrols, lulz.
3/12/2008 3:15:52 AM
^
3/12/2008 3:23:58 AM
^^wtf do you go on campus?I don't even have classes on campus this semester (thanks, DELTA), and I live in Garner, and I see campus cops all the damn time.]
3/12/2008 7:30:41 AM
only at NCSU would students get mugged on campus. I think we need to purge the ghettos off of western and behind Hillsbourgh near the bell tower and ship them east of lake wheeler[Edited on March 12, 2008 at 9:04 AM. Reason : a]
3/12/2008 9:04:40 AM
only at NCSU?that's just silly
3/12/2008 9:07:31 AM
screw the Concealed carry law.if you've got a gun. wear it proud.

http://wral.com/news/local/story/2567666/Why do I think TDub had something to do with this story, lol. Love it. I think WolfAlert should have been utilized irregardless of whether the so called suspects were "running away from campus". That makes no difference. A lot of State students live in the areas surrounding both Centennial and Main campus' so I fail to see how this wouldn't have helped students.David Rainer, get your shit together.
3/12/2008 6:44:29 PM
I think I will call for a Safety Escort every time I go anywhere on campus between buildings, no matter what time of day. Just to fuck around with them.
3/12/2008 7:23:06 PM
ehh, i don't know. I kinda feel like a robbery like that is an isolated incident (as far as whether there would be any immediate threat after the initial attack). I mean the dude probably isn't trying to get caught. I think that it's important that we don't overuse this system to avoid desensitizing ourselves to potential threats.[Edited on March 12, 2008 at 7:36 PM. Reason : wolf alert]
3/12/2008 7:36:04 PM
3/12/2008 7:37:03 PM
^^ it's the two incidents in less than 24 hours which causes concern, that and the fact that it involved a gun, an in an area where students were potentially going to be in over the following few hours...
3/12/2008 11:54:55 PM
3/13/2008 1:12:25 AM
I work two buildings down from where the armed robbery occurred. If it weren't for the fact that it's a college campus, I would've been carrying to work everyday this whole time.
3/13/2008 7:10:53 AM
^x7. Yeah, I only heard about the robbery because of a text message another classmate received from a friend. The alert system seems kind of a waste if they don't use it when people need to know shit. The only time I see campus police is when they're parked in the bookstore parking lot playing solitaire on their laptops. Makes me feel safer.
3/13/2008 8:04:10 AM
I'm on centennial and would be signing up for a CCW course if I could take one to work.
3/13/2008 12:35:57 PM
it would be awesome if nc would allow concealed carry on college campuses
