I'm working on a computer for someone... Windows XP keeps booting to the blue "unmountable boot volume" screen. I've used the windows CD and loaded the recovery console where I've tried chkdsk /r and fixboot. chkdsk usually only goes 50-75% and says it has encountered one or more unrecoverable errors. This is also the 3rd time the computer has done this, the first two after power failure. The first two times though, chkdsk fixed it despite not getting to 100%. Suggestions? Reinstall windows? Dying hard drive?

Dead HDDSlave it to another system if she needs files. No guarantee it'll work. She'll need a new one.

That's what I figured. From what I can find on the net, most people had good luck with slaving it to save files. Guess that's what I'm gonna do now. Thanks.

yeah and try not to run it much until you're ready to pull the files, if it is going bad its minutes are probably numbered

It's not for a she... it is a family friend though. I also wanted to ask before going out and buying a new hd if it wasn't necessary.
