depends are you looking for a cheap bar with good specials to just get plastered at?
or a trendy one a group of girls would want to go out to?

A small list, not making judgement if places are good or not. Just throwing them out there and their main features.

cheap places to get slammed (there are more, here is a few of them):
east village (1.50 pints of coors, pbr everyday)
ruckus (mugnight 3 times a week, 5 dollar pitchers monday)
the bar (1.50 beers everyday, 3 of them)
pb's (1 dollar liq/beers tues/sat)
goat (mystery beers)
rum runners (only on wens 1 dollar wells and beers, piano w/singing along, gets old after a few times though)

Places with historical feel/laid back:
mitches (recently banned smoking)
players retreat (57 years next to ncsu)
saucer (not really historical, but has a good pub feel, 200+ beers, hot hot catholic school girls, monday most pints 2.50)

Trendy places (some have various specials, more dressed up crowds, dancing, cigars/wines etc):
mosquito
white collar
blue martini
there are a lot of them in warehouse and glenwood area

In addition to what's already been said, there's these three around Moores Square/Hargett St:

Landmark Tavern
Raleigh Times
Tir Na Nog

Also, if you have a DD who can drive you to the middle of nowhere in North Raleigh...

Horniblow's Tavern

What are some other suggestions for Glenwood South? My friends are coming up and aren't into the really trendy places and dance clubs. Is Hibernian or Napper Tandies any good?

only if you like huge crowds. I like the place any other day but monday. I'll pay more for my beer if I don't have to deal with a mass of people, but I enjoy more of the sit down, enjoy my beer and talk to people bar than the stand up the whole time, get bumped by people constantly and try to have yelling conversations bar experience.

I would recommend the cheapest one that is close to your house if you are a serious drinker.

Then you can abandon vehicle and walk home if you somehow find yourself at 2:30 in the morning standing outside seeing double.

I had mine at Jax. It was great because then I knew like 4/5 of the staff.

It really does not matter where your 21st is you are not gonna remember it anyway. You might as well have it somewhere your friends can get into.
