and it wont charge unless you have it plugged in and moved a certain way?

ive managed to do that to my laptop now. damn it.

i bet a new charger is like 100 bucks. can the electrical engineering nerds use equipment and fix the wire better than i can? i was thinking of just taping it up tight with electrical tape. but i guess a nice nerd with an eye for wires can figure out which side its broken on and tape it up right

i have to literally plug it in, and then turn the male part upside down so the wire runs up the back of the screen in order to make it connect and charge.

what do you think, engineers? just tape the wire to the back of the monitor so it stays pointed that way and doesnt rip anymore? (even though i see no rip)

has happened to me several times for both my phone and various laptops

each time it wasn't the actual charger it was the the piece inside the phone/computer that connected with the charger. You can rig it up for a while, but eventually that won't work anymore either, that's when you pray you're still under warrenty.

is it the wire or the contacts on the plug? that's where you need to begin. take an eraser and rub the contacts. then finish off the cleaning w/ rubbing alcohol and a cloth. what kinda charger is it? the "tube" shape:

or one of those "multi-point contact" ones:

if the latter, you may need to bend one of the pins out some more to make better contact. at least that fixes my Treo charger when it stops working. if it is the tube, you prolly need to fix the wire. cut and paste basically. you got soldering skills?

good call on the warranty. im still good for like a month. but cant they tell if its damage that i did?

i'm SURE its from charging it while i use it and having the plug bent up against my leg or something

PS - im not sure exactly where it is, but im guessing its the plug cause pointing it up makes it work.

PS PS - motorola cell phones are the WORST. the old chargers (with the small thing and the 3 pins) were bad, and i was happy to see the inch wide thing. then i realized they were just as bad.

^ yep same here, and they (the computer makers) know all about the problem too (they've had to come fix practically every graduate students computer in my program for this at least once).

thats what i get looking up my model (gateway mt6705) charger, and that looks like mine. so thats what it looks like.

also its only 30 bucks on amazon, so even if warranty wont send me one i'll be ok it looks like. i was just worried i'd have to spend 150 bucks on a stupid cord

there, i found the super fix it tape and just taped a fat piece to both the cord and the back of the screen. looks a little goofy but it'll work for now until i figure out a rig that i can remove when i need to

until then i cant carry it around with me for more than 2 hours. but thats rarely an issue, cause theres power everywhere. i just need the cord to get it into the damned computer. but now the battery icon has the happy little plus beside it. so its all happy. and before i go to bed tonight ill go into bios and do a battery redo and see how well that works to reprogram the stupid thing. thinks its charged after 10 minutes.

http://www.amazon.com/Ac-Adapter-Gateway-Volt-Watt/dp/B000BO0Z96/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204343731&sr=1-1

"regularly" = 69.52
"amazon price" = 26.91
savings = 42.61 (61%)

so i'll get one on warranty while/if i can. and if not, i'll just get one off there and treat it better

^I'll try to find out, we have such a large contract with them they actually send someone here to fix it for us, so I've never asked. If i run into our tech person tommorow I will ask him what this would run for if not covered).

it's your motherboard probably... when it wasn't my power cord it was always the motherboard... which is why I asked if the plug moved when wiggled

[Edited on February 29, 2008 at 11:17 PM. Reason : lol i have such a huge contract with dell they do the same for me.. lol]

What is the voltage of the charger Jackleg? I've got a few floating around here.

Just saw from the link you posted that it is 19v. I've got one you can have if you need it. No idea if the plug will match though.

the wiggle-the-wire thing happened to my dell - it was the female power cord receptacle.
i had it replaced for ~$40 by a printer repair guy that likes to solder. having it disassembled makes his price go down since he doesn't have to take it apart.
