2/19/2008 10:55:45 AM
I'm too poor to buy furniture, so I just put my frame on cinderblocks.
2/19/2008 11:29:06 AM

I just bought a sofa from Ambiente. They have some really nice stuff if you're spending some cash, but I think a lot of their furniture sacrifices comfort in favor or aesthetics. It's a pretty common problem with a lot of modern and contemporary furniture I guess.I've seen platform beds at Overstock.com. You might want to check there and see if they have anything.[Edited on February 19, 2008 at 12:34 PM. Reason : l]
2/19/2008 12:33:21 PM
word, thanks for the tip
2/19/2008 12:44:31 PM
^^i thought the same thing when as i was shopping for furniture today.i'd rather have ultimate comfort over style, as i can make it fit in with the decor.
2/19/2008 1:00:56 PM
Platform beds are typically designed to be minimalist, not flashy or expensive (although they frequently end up being expensive). Just build one. It's not complicated. Plywood + cinderblocks ftw.
2/19/2008 1:18:04 PM
i dont have the space or means to make one
2/19/2008 1:35:13 PM
^^ cinderblocks... haha, that's appealing to look at
2/19/2008 1:54:00 PM
you can make them look good i have desk made of cinderblocks at home its amazing what you can do with some paint and a good idea... right now its painted up all black to fit with everythign else in the room
2/19/2008 2:07:24 PM
its also really easy to build the base out of cinderblocks, but cut wood to cover them from being viewed. and you can paint the wood etc, and no one would really know there were cinderblocks for the foundation

I might be getting rid of my queen platform soon actually. I can't recall where I bought it (i'll look up my invoices when I get off work) nothing too extravagant and I think I might have paid a buck fifty for it 7 months ago?

ikea has some nice ones. i couldn't find most of them online, so i know the catalog has more. here are a couple though:$179.00 available in 5 colors (does not include slatted bed base)http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29849243$249.00 available in 2 colors (does not include slatted bed base)http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29838956slatted bed bases $30 and $40http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/95844509http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10112549
2/20/2008 11:27:08 AM
I have that first one, it was a pretty good deal. I know I've taken it apart at least 4-5 times moving and its still sturdy.
2/20/2008 11:29:33 AM
^ cool. i was actually considering that one as well, so that's good to know.
2/20/2008 11:34:11 AM
Is it laminated particle board or real wood ?
2/20/2008 11:45:35 AM
fiberboard is what it says on the sitethanks for posting those. i really like the black one
2/20/2008 12:19:59 PM
no prob. i've been trying to convince myself for a while to get one. now my excuse is to wait for the tax return.
2/20/2008 12:25:53 PM
its laminated. The headboard and footboard are kind of a lighter wood composite, the side beams are heavy as shit.[Edited on February 20, 2008 at 12:26 PM. Reason : .]
2/20/2008 12:26:04 PM

2/20/2008 3:16:30 PM
ArcBoyeee's is straight PIMP. i'm hopin to eventually build one myself... maybe when i move outta this busted joint
2/20/2008 4:03:34 PM
ArcBoyeee, how heavy is it and can you break it down to move it?
2/20/2008 5:07:51 PM
i'll throw in the obligatory ArcBoyeee's bed is badass comment (just checked out the thread)[no homo][Edited on February 20, 2008 at 5:10 PM. Reason : no homo]
2/20/2008 5:09:43 PM
Yeah that bed looks cool as hell but like someone else said I'd have to wear shin guards whenever I got up to piss at night
2/20/2008 5:50:24 PM
ArcBoyeee, what did you use to support the bed underneath, or is it still on its frame?
2/20/2008 7:13:17 PM
I must have one of these
2/20/2008 7:32:49 PM
yeah this thread reminded me that I have to go furniture shopping.
2/20/2008 10:57:57 PM
its just a square frame on the lowermost tier, no cinder blocks lol
2/21/2008 12:47:32 AM
What are the advantages to these?
2/21/2008 11:42:47 AM
westelm.com might have something, they have modern furniture that is pretty reasonably priced
2/21/2008 12:17:49 PM
so you just slap your mattress on one of these?those look like some futon-like mattresses on some of those...
2/21/2008 12:34:38 PM
the mattress isn't on top, its recessed.ikea uses mattress pads on a lot of beds, basically looks like a thinner futon type mattress on top of a regular mattress.
2/21/2008 12:48:10 PM
[Edited on February 21, 2008 at 1:01 PM. Reason : might get one.]
2/21/2008 12:55:06 PM
couldn't you just slap a piece of plywood on the bed to support your mattress?
