i applied for one for my parents...they live out and podunk, and so when you combine this with WRAL's free antenna program (http://www.wral.com/wral-tv/story/1180307/), it's a pretty cool setup

When I checked for rules on what would constitute an acceptable converter box, I found minutes and meeting summary that suggested it would be silly to allow boxes for HDTV "ready" tv's (with component video.) I didn't find anything that said there wouldn't be any, but...anyone know for sure? I don't think the current list includes any.

I'm still trying to grasp the whole analog vs. digital as well.I have a Sony 42" LCD Projection HDTV (I got it a BJ's in the fall of '06), but i dont think it has a digital tuner. This is because I couldn't get WRAL's HD broadcast. I could only get analog signal using an antenna (Channels 4, 5, 11, 17, 50, & some others). However, I now have digital cable w/ HD.when my lower rate expires for the digital cable, will i need a converter to go back to broadcasts?will regular cable be digital, or will it still be analog (channels 1-99)?[Edited on February 18, 2008 at 11:54 AM. when are we supposed to get our coupons?

the whole digital-analog stuff is for over the air channels using an antenna. So if you have a satellite or cable, there's no need to worry about it.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago. Now I am not sure which box to buy.

Stupid thing about them is that they expire. Also there magnetic cards that not all retailers accept, so you cant order a box online and use the "coupon". Mine were only good for 3 months from issuance.[Edited on May 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM. Reason : .]

got both of my parents' about a month and a half ago...bought the units from walmart ($13/each after taxes) and sent in the application for the free antennas from WRAL...received both the antennas about 2 weeks after mailing them outi sent one from my parents' place in the middle of nowhere - they sent them a MASSIVE (cablemaster?) outdoor antenna with two amplifiers (one passive and one active?)i sent the other one from my apartment here in raleigh and they sent me a pretty nice one (also cablemaster, i think)all-in-all, $26 dollar bucks for two converters and two nice HD OTA antennas...not too shabby
