This bitch is really starting to get on my nerves. She is VERY much so Hillary Clinton in 2000. I don't see her sitting around the East Wing planning state dinners and picking out wall paper.

She was just on Larry King, and a lot of what she says is when "we" run this country, when "we" start making change...

Thoughts?

I think a lot of strong willed women (ie HRC, Michelle Obama, etc) are going to assume when their husband holds a high powered position, then she's going to share in it....

I think Laura Bush is an exception, but a lot of first ladies have shared the spotlight with their husbands and had a lot of influence on policies.

^^ except the pedigree is drastically different. The socioeconomic status of Obama's upbringing is far divergent than Clinton's. Can't speak for Michelle Obama but talking about Barack here.

When Michelle Obama used we, I took it more to mean, "we americans." very much in line with Barack's speeches. She is directly refering to when Americans start running this country and when americans make change.

I like her...I think she humanizes her husband in a much needed way.

I wouldn't compare her to Hillary at all. I mean they're both clearly smart, successful women, but I don't think Michelle Obama longs for the spotlight as Hillary does.

I don't think she'll be a Laura Bush style First Lady, but I don't see her setting up shop in the West Wing, either.

^Good.

Laura Bush doesn't do shit except read books to retarded kids and bake cookies.

The First Lady of the White House should be an ambassador and a representative of the Executive Branch of the White House. She should use her influence to do good things for America.

Unlike in this current stage, the Republicans did not have a legacy of controlling congress. When Bill Clinton was elected President, the democratic party had about 40 years of congressional control.

In fact, let's recap her accomplishments.

According to Wikipedia:

Quote :
"
-Launched the first National Book Festival.
-In November 2001, she became the first person other than a president to deliver the weekly presidential radio address. She used the opportunity to discuss the plight of women in Afghanistan during the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, saying, "The brutal oppression of women is a central goal of the terrorists", which made no logical sense.
-Started an initiative designed to encourage patriotism in American schools entitled National Anthem Project.
-Appeared on Egypt's version of Sesame Street.
"

It's clear, having a house wife as the First Lady is the best choice for America.

Quote :
"Having seen her aunt Edith Roosevelt's strictly circumscribed role and traditional protocol during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt (1901–1909), Eleanor set out on a different course. Despite criticism, she continued with the active business and speaking agenda she had begun before becoming First Lady, in an era when few women had careers outside the home. She was the first First Lady to hold weekly press conferences and started writing a syndicated newspaper column, "My Day". Eleanor Roosevelt maintained a heavy travel schedule over her twelve years in the White House, frequently making personal appearances at labor meetings to assure Depression-era workers that the White House was mindful of their plight. In one widely-circulated cartoon of the time lampooning the peripatetic First Lady, she was pictured appearing inside a coal mine wearing a miner's hat, to the astonishment of a startled miner who exclaims, "My gosh! There's Mrs. Roosevelt".

During Franklin Roosevelt's terms as President, Eleanor was vocal in her support of the African-American civil rights movement. She was outspoken in her support of Marian Anderson in 1939 when the black singer was denied the use of Washington's Constitution Hall and was instrumental in the subsequent concert held on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Eleanor became an important connection for FDR's administration to the African-American population during the segregation era.

Eleanor Roosevelt saw the job of the First Lady as a buffer between depression victims and the government bureaucracy, a guardian of human values within the administration not just as a social, ceremonial position.

1) Obviously, the role of women in society at large has changed.

2) Many first ladies have had particular issues/initiatives they used their visibility and access as advocates for.

First ladies should shut the fuck up. They aren't elected officials and as such should have no more say in government policy than any other private citizen. Now, that will never happen, but that's the way it should be. We bitch all the time about the undue influence of special interests, but guess where the biggest undue influence comes from... I long for an unmarried president to run this country.

That's not actually what she said.

She said she'd support the nominee and then was asked, "Could you see yourself working to support Hillary Clinton if she gets the nomination?"

She replied, "I'd have to think about that. I'd have to think about policies, her approach, her tone."

There's a big difference between supporting the nominee and working to support the nominee.

Not that you care...you know...about reality or anything.

^ Now she reminds me even more of the Clintons.

Now help me figure out the difference between "support" and "working to support". Are you saying Michelle would support Hillary, in her heart of hearts, but that due to Hillary's "policies, approach, and tone" she would NOT campaign for her? I mean, that's a HUGE difference and it's SOOOOO much better for unifying the party. You really showed me a thing or two.

Now, if you're having this much fun parsing the meaning of "is", maybe you would like to defend some of Obama's policies over in my other thread.

There's no parsing going on...what she's saying is pretty clear, you just enjoy being insolent where the Obamas are concerned. Either that, or you don't know what it means to work for someone...

Let's try it a different way.

Generally speaking, I don't get too key up for statewide races in North Carolina...but, this year, Janet Cowell's running for the Democratic nomination for Treasurer.

I like Janet Cowell...a lot. During discussions about the housing ordinance, she was one of the members of the City Council that really listened to students and their arguments. Cowell and the mayor even went door-to-door in Raleigh to solicit opinions on the issue (the ordinance eventually failed). She earned my respect in a big way back then.

But what happens in the general election if she's not the Democratic nominee for Treasurer?

It doesn't matter.

I'm supporting the Democratic nominee for Treasurer. I do not want Bill Daughtridge as treasurer.

But, will I work for David Young if he wins? Am I going to go out and canvas for Young? Will I actively campaign for him the same way I would if Cowell were the nominee? Probably not.

That's the difference...but you knew that already because, in the words of CJ Cregg, "you're stupid, but you're not stupid, you know what I'm saying?"

So your answer is "Yes" and my point still stands that it is a divisive move if the Obama's do not actively campaign for Hillary.

See, that didn't require 300+ words did it?

Though I doubt you would spend the same energy answering my questions on Obama's policies because you know as well as I do that they suck. Though I guess "history", "symbolism", and "charisma" are sooooo much more important.

It's not that there aren't substantive reasons for me backing Barack Obama., it's just that, quite frankly, mocking you is just much more fun.

Riddle me this...

What's Joe Biden's wife going to do in the general election?

Is Barbara Richardson gonna be out there on the stump?

What about Elizabeth Edwards? Or Jackie Clegg, Chris Dodd's wife?

Assuming that their husbands aren't on the ticket, I can't imagine them being out actively campaigning for Hillary (or Obama) either.

There are completely different rules for spouses vs. former/currently serving Democratic officials.

I mean, Hadassah isn't out there stumping for McCain, despite her having stumped for her husband when she ran for office.

1) I think it's meaningful you can't even name any of the other wives besides Elizabeth Edwards. And who can blame you? None of the others have been as vocal as Michelle has. She is now giving her own speeches and taking on the Clintons in the press. Can you imagine Joe Biden's wife doing that (whoever she is)?
http://blogs.reuters.com/trail08/2008/01/24/michelle-obama-takes-on-hill-bill/

2) Michelle did not say she might not "work to support" Hillary because the rules are different for spouces. She said she might not do it because of Hillary's policies and tone. That's just a llliiitttlle different. That seems like it could actually hurt Hillary in the general election because 1) she could get less support from former Obama-lovers 2) Republicans could bring it up in the general election to show how "divisive" Hillary is.

Now, I'm not good at spin. I prefer policy. If you want to talk policy, you know where to find me.

drunknloaded...well, Andrew Young did say that Bill Clinton's probably been with more black women than Barack Obama...

Socks``, it's meaningful that you didn't read my post. I specifically named Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, Joe Lieberman and John Edwards' wives. All the wives stumped for their husbands in early primary states (Hadassah did back in 2004 when Lieberman ran for President).

Joe Biden's wife's name, btw, is Jill.

Which is why I specifically added that Michelle is MORE vocal and that she (unlike the others) has directly responded to the Clinton's in the press (see link). The fact that you could not name the other's wives without googling is evidence of this. Who's not read who's post?

You also seem to have left out my second point that you're changing what Michelle said to preserve your iconic view of the Obamas. Instead of Hillary's "policies" and "tone" under question, it's because the "rules" are different.

Here's another good example of Michelle Obama not being divisive.

Quote :
""What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback. And let me tell you something -- for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I've seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it's made me proud.""

She obviously misspoke with that comment. I'm guessing she meant, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of the level of passion and political activism of my country."

Given the context, that appears to be her meaning. I'm guessing the campaign clarifies this, and puts this molehill behind them.

^ I think that rading blacks out a few key pieces. She did not say she proud of the activism itself. She said she was not proud of her country until its people displayed this level of "activism". Of course, I don't know what activism she's talking about except folks campaigning and supporting Obama.

But whatever. What really pisses me off is the fact CNN isn't hounding this like Hillary's "crying" insident in NH. "Were her tears real?" Give me a fucking break. These are both non-issues (though imo Obama's entire campaign is a "nonissue" since it's actually about charisma), but CNN is pretty biased in its coverage of these "nonissues".
