I would assume he gets this info now, sends you a check for too much money accidentally, and then asks you to refund the remainder by check. At that point he has name, address, and checking account number, which is all he needs. Not to mention he has whatever cash you "refunded" him as a little stupidity bonus.

The english is good, and I imagine he'd draw it out. It's easier to sucker people a little at a time. Getting name and address up front is just a good way to weed out the retards.

thats what I ment, basically with the information he is asking up front, what can he figure out? I may have him send me a check and hold it for a month.

You want to make sure that the checks you get are certified and wait till it fully clears your bank.

Why would anyone accept a personal check from a stranger?

It clears your bank initially then it bounces. Have you been in the pen or something for the last couple of years?

There was no need to post this thread. Craigslist has the following link on nearly every page and in every e-mail that you receive via their re-mailer system:

http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html

The scam has been figured out like eight billion times already.

The banks are willing partners in this whole deal. They make as much money from the bounced checks as the scammers. They could take weeks to notify you that the check bounced.

It's obviously crooked. Why would you even waste your time?

[Edited on February 11, 2008 at 3:36 PM. Reason : I've met at least 2 people this week that fell for it. Never underestimate the personal fable.]

I know its a scam, I am definately not doing anything with this email, I am just more curious as to how it worked since I have received 2 of these emails in the last week from 2 different craigslist postings. I have seen a lot of scams, I guess I can just see how this one would be easier to fall for since the scammer isnt asking you to send money back to him/her.

Could you not take the check they sent to their bank and cash it?

Try it. They'll ask for 2 forms of ID and/or 1 form and a fingerprint.

Their bank is not going to be locally represented. It will be something like "Rochester Savings and Loan" or some other fictitious name that sounds like a local bank from their area. There are probably thousands of smalltime banks across America that you've never heard of and will never see.
