which places still sell puppies? i remember the flea market used to carry them but not anymore...also seems like most pet stores don't sell puppies anymore.

rescues if you are wanting a certain breed. Actually that's, in my opinion, the best option. Go to a rescue organization. They will have several of the same breed, and you can pick the one you like based on personality, looks, whatever.

Check shelters, craigslist. Both my dogs came from ads I saw on craigslist, one was a foster from a shelter, the other was a link from the Harnett shelter and we got her there. They both have been healthy and great dogs. After doing a lot of research on where to get a dog prior to getting ours I'll never get one from a breeder. I suppose if you are picky and looking for a specific breed then you should go to a breeder, but if you are just looking for a dog then check the shelters/rescue organizations.

Reputable breeders won't have a lot of breeds at the same time. If you want to learn about breeds, do your research online and then contact breeders with a consistent track record. A good one will breed for temperment as well as conformation

People who buy dogs at flea markets and pet superstores usually don't have any business owning dogs.

You have to pay a lot at the pet stores, and I've heard bad things about the dogs there. Rescue dogs are super loving! I got my beagle from a rescue, and they're small dogs so that may meet your 'toy' criteria.

both are sweet loving dogs and i refuse to believe that im a "bad" person for loving my little full breed just as much as my mutt. (not saying you guys are necessarily saying that at all...but some people seriously thing that, wtf?)

buuuut i understand your concern on the toy breed problem.
its hard to find smaller dogs in shelters

twice i have adopted a pup from the pound (OH NO IT SHOULDNT GET MORE THAN 20 LBS) and it ended up being about 60 (which is a big deal in a little apt)
luckily i was not in an apt at the time
but that could have been ugly

i do sugest finding certain breed rescues...

http://www.drna.org is where I got my dog. They are a dachshund rescue. Currently the Durham chapter has about 4 puppies on the site. They were born from a mother that was rescued from a kill shelter.

thanks for all the help....

i've raised a lot of dogs through the years....daschund mutt, schnauzer, pekingnese, and how i have a shih tzu now....i want to get another one for both companionship with my shih tzu and to give my gf experience in raising a dog together

i usually prefer to get mine from owners, that way i can see the parents and surroundings etc....i don't like to get them pet stores or breeders, but i'm open if i really can't find any

also we'll plan to visit some shelters too b/c if i can adopt and help out why not....but some breeds i like are rare to find at shelters

i don't want a big dog but i do want a more active one and a shorter hair one

i'm currently leaning towards jack russell terrier, westie, miniature pinscher, or beagle

They have everything packaged including breeder info., pedigree back to the great great great parents, free first vet visit, all first shots, discounts on supplies, and the people were nice. I got a full breed West highland white terrier and he's been the best dog so far.

and i hate to burst your bubble but a pedigree dating back generations don't mean shit.. especially if there aren't any titles attached to it. Pedigrees can be incorrect or fake and the average pet owner can't tell the difference.
Not to say a dog from the PetPad won't be a great pet and companion but those puppies are shipped in from breeders and you didn't see the parents, can't verify that the parents are in good health, have no serious problems or good temperments or even if the parents are well taken care of, what type of care those puppies received before being shipped to the petstore, etc...
You could be setting yourself up for a lot of heartache and dissapointment, not to mention large vet bills if the dog is sick or has problems.


Please - if you want a purebred or a small breed and want to purchase one find a reputable breeder. one that lets you see where they raise their animals, let you meet and interact with the parents and seem to care that their puppies are going to good forever homes.

Most "reputable breeders" are unfortunately registered with the AKC, but are puppy mills - they produce just under the limit number of litters a year to avoid having to be inspected, or they don't register enough litters in a year to be inspected. Now a days, anyone can freakin "register" their dogs, and therefore have "papers" but that means nothing. Those "reputable breeders" more than likely don't do preventative screening on parents for genetic disorders before they breed, nor do they follow bloodlines, pedigrees, and breeding stock to ensure that the animals they are producing are of good quality. I loathe any company who sells dogs/cats. It's inhumane and not responsible.

If you are wanting a dog, please do some research before you buy as far as what breed you want. Then research quality breeders of that breed who care about their dogs, do preventative screenings like for hips, OFA, and genetic screenings for diseases/disorders that are common in their breed. Fortunately, the AKC does have a breeder referral program on their website that can direct you to a local club in the area that supports the breed you're interested in.

The only way to end puppy mills is to stop buying dogs from pet stores.

normally i would agree with you on this
but carter is EXTREMELY healthy...
never had any problems (ear infection once...that she got from another dog, clear in about 2 days)

however, i do completely agree with adopting if possible

just bc a puppy comes from the humane society or a rescue group doesn't mean you won't get to see or know anything about the parents. that definitely wasn't the case when i got my puppy last year from the columbus co humane society.

Back in 92 my mom really wanted a Minature Schnauzer and did a LOT of research about them. She drove from Raleigh, NC to Lynchburg, Virginia just to conduct a face to face interview with the breeder, meet our future dog's parents and grandparents, and be screened by the breeder.

That is the kind of attention you need to expect from a "reputable" breeder.

The chances of getting a healthy dog from a pet store are VERY small.

Contact the NC jack russell rescue. I fostered for them, they are good people and often get pups a week or two after someone buys them, when they realize what a jack really is.

On finding a breeder or even a dog in a shelter, my dog came from Charlotte when I lived in the Savannah, GA area. If you're going to have a dog for 10+ years a day of driving is no big deal. Honestly, my next dog will probably be a police dog reject from a trainer/breeder in Texas. Or maybe one in Toronto, I haven't decided, but as long as you'll have a dog going through a little trouble and expense to get one really isn't a big deal.

another bad story about pet stores that sells dogs. friend of mine bought 2 pups from one in fayetteville that supposedly got them from reputable breeders. both then tested positive for parvo when he took them to the vet. both eventually had to be put to sleep
