my gfs fridge has stopped cooling as well as it should be. im sure it has to be a freon leak. The make is whirlpool and it was manufactured in june 2000. the ice maker also stopped working at the same time. the freezer is still cold, but warmer than it should be. how much would it cost to recharge the freon and solder the leak. ive called a repair shop and they said it would be 60 to come look at it and couldnt give me a price till they came to look at it. if it costs 200+ to fix we might as well get a new one.

highly doubt it's a freon leak unless you've been doing some cutting under there. you need to pull the back panel off inside the freezer and make sure you don't have any ice accumulation near the fan hendering air flow. most likely it'll only have one fan and it uses diverters to control the amount of air flow to the fridge keeping things less cold.
however, if you do pull it apart and don't find any airflow restrictions then check the compressor to make sure it's running normal. by normal i mean not excessively hot and going into thermal overload causing shortened cycles. that would be an indication of low freon.
another thing to check is make sure the coils or "grid looking thing" on the back of the fridge is clean and free of dust. if that's dirty it can cause it not to cool also.

if any of ^ doesn't work, just junk it. it's not worth putting any money into it when you consider the price of a used one on craigslist or even a basic new one from lowes/hd. unless it's something fancy.

i took off the back panel yesterday. the fan support had loosend up and it had been hitting the surrounding plastic before finally just coming to rest on it. took about 20 min to fix but the ice maker is still broken, im thinkin the fan could have blown a fuse in the fridge if there are any? bc ive already turned it off and on from the breaker box and it still didnt work after that, and ive taken it apart and nothing looks wrong

i didn't know the icemaker was broke also or else i would've told you how to fix that shit too.
before you start to take apart anything, make sure the arm is down which calls for ice. if it's up then the ice maker is off.
now how to fix it:
first make sure it's just not jammed. pop the front cover off (use a flat head screwdriver on the bottom of the cover) to expose the gearing. carefully force the large gear with your hand to turn clockwise. once you get it to move a little it should start to rotate on it's own if it's jammed. most of the time this fixes them.
if you see that it already moves (the large gear is what turns the arms to dump the ice) then see if there is any ice in the tray. if there is then most likely the heating element (heats up the bottom of the tray to free the ice so it can be dumped) is bad. if this is the case, then look on ebay for an icemaker.
if there isn't any ice in the tray then check the fill tube in the back of the freezer. it'll be a hard plastic "chute" that allows water to flow from the supply line into the freezer and pours the water into the tray at the ice maker. this chute will be inside the freezer in the back at the top. this will sometimes have frozen water in it preventing the ice maker from getting water. two screws hold it in place and can be accessed from the back.
if the chute is clear of ice, then the only other culprit the problem could be is the fill valve located on the bottom of the fridge in the back. this is the piece that the water supply line from the wall connects to. get the model number and serial number of the fridge and call D&L appliance parts. they are located on atlantic ave. across from Creative Acoustics. the fill valve will cost you around $25.

did the icemaker work before the cooling problem? if so, i'll bet it's just jammed like underPSI said. a lot of times they'll get water or condensation in them if the temp rises above 32 for a while, then when it cools back down it freezes up.

thanks underpsi, im betting its the heating element on the bottom. when i first noticed it was broken i put my hand in the try and felt ice in there. i tried to push it out but it was frozed solid to it. if it was working im sure i could have gotten it out. i guess i will start looking on ebay or craigslist for a new one, or just get a couple ice trays. thanks again for all your help
