The son surviving really bugged me. Made the ending feel just a little too contrived. I mean ok sure, super advanced aliens killed by germs- it's a little deus ex machina but that's how the book ended so that's cool. His ex there and still alive? Ok, but that's starting to get a little too saccharine of an ending. But then his son, who ran to join the fight and should have probably died- being basically weaponless and inexperienced, is there and alive too? Nooo, that's a bit too much sugar in the coffee for me.[Edited on February 3, 2008 at 12:57 AM. Reason : ]

A little? The whole world is destroyed except for their little Boston neighborhood where grandma, wife, and son come out of the house nicely dressed waiting with a warm cup of coffee.
2/3/2008 12:57:35 AM
Yes, I was using dramatic understatement.
2/3/2008 12:58:34 AM
oic. Something Spielberg could learn to use
2/3/2008 12:59:01 AM
Hahaha, good point
2/3/2008 12:59:19 AM
the whole world was not destroyed. they hit thie big citys first. they didn't have as many tripods as you think and plus some of them were rusty. They also weren't killling people like crazy they were just collecting random people to harvest their blood. By the time they got to boston they were already about dead so there wasn't as much destruction in boston. The only thing you could make a point for is how they were in the tripod that blew up and creashed and they make it out unharmed.

Thanks Steve

^^ No, what you're saying would have made the movie silly and the ending would have been abrupt and pointless. Having the whole family survive is not as painful from a plausibility standpoint as it is from how it ruins the impact of the film.

think about it, if you were in your house you most likely would have survived. the aliens had no massive killing machines, all they had were the lasers that could only kill like 1 person at a time. the person next to you could be zapped and you wouldn't even be harmed. the only other ways people died were like vehicle crashes, being stepped on or harvested. very inefficient killers.

basically saying we can do what we want
2/5/2008 2:08:58 PM
the cloverfield monster would have fucked those aliens up
2/5/2008 2:11:52 PM
honestly, I thought the Tom Cruise version was one of THE worst movies I've ever seen. EVER
