Thank goodness it is real BBQ and not that Western NC fauxBQ that they try to claim in some restaurants.

TofE and I have been there a few times, we really liked it. The pit master just got out of jail for embezzling money from his last bbq place.

Yes, jlancas03 and I have been and we enjoyed it VERY much. We almost went back the other night, but decided to stick to our side of town so we wouldn't be late for the movie.

I had bought my parents a gift card to Nana's Chophouse, and they said they would take us out on the card. By the time we got around to going (December, just after Christmas), it had become The Pit. They still honored the gift card, and still have Nana's menu in addition to BBQ, so we checked it out.

The wings were fabulous, and the BBQ was sooooo good. All of their pigs come from a free range pig farm in NC, so I thought that was pretty cool. They offered all the southern pig pickin' sides, and there were hush puppies of course. They do catering as well.

Staff and service was okay, but I think the issue there is just being a bit understaffed for the holidays. They had a decent amount of patronage the night we went, but according to the owner they were doing really well as all their customers had been word of mouth. He bragged they hadn't used any of their ad money yet.

So this is getting long, but it's good. I definitely recommend it. You can dress casual, but don't expect to spend casually.

Oh, and the owner was saying they were gonna start opening for lunch too.

what kind of barbeque is that?

eastern, but a poor example of it

i'm pretty sure they don't cook their own bbq. it just comes out of buckets and they warm it up. they might add some sauce or something.

It's alright. It's basically on par with Smithfields, just 4 times as expensive.

western = tomato-base sauce

eastern = vinegar-base sauce

[Edited on February 1, 2008 at 1:56 PM. Reason : really the only significant difference]

Do research before talking, they cook whole pigs:

Oh, and if any of y'all want to go and want to be a bit more affordable, go at lunch time. They just opened up for that and the menu is cheaper then.

I think this quote was talking about Smithfield's, not The Pit (post directly above someone asked what kind of que Smithfield's served)

Between eastern and western BBQ, I typically prefer the western. However, if it's made right, both are damn good

Just ate dinner there on Friday night

<3 Mr. Mitchell.

^hell yeah, got my DVR set to record that tonight. We asked Mr. Mitchell (the PitMaster and owner) if he won and he said he was sworn to secrecy but that nobody comes into his house and whoops his ass.

I'm not a fan at all. the place is waaayyy over priced for what it is and the bbq isn't really that good. I much rather go to ol' time than this place.

Their hush puppies are good and their beans okay but thats about it. They don't even cook their own mashed potatoes. the mac and cheese is decent but no where near home made and poole's diner has much better m&c if you want that while out. The bbq serving size is too small for my taste and the sauce didn't have the kick i was looking for.

if it was 5.99 instead of 11.99 I would have been content, but its definitely too hyped up and not worth the money.

Out of the 10 or so people i was with when we went none of us were impressed enough to go again.

Ol time was a disappointment.
People talk it up all the time, and I go there...it wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't good.

If all they have is stringy chopped BBQ, it's obviously not that good of a place.

^^i agree ol time is even talked up, but its on par with this place for a fraction of the cost. actually poole's diner has* better bbq than the pit as well. i've had a lot of home made bbq that beats the pants off of the pit. most people i know who talk it up and say how much they like it do so because they are afraid if they don't have that opinion they won't be seen as trendy or hip. but if you like it, thats your thing.

*their menu switches around so bbq isn't always available.
