I did not work during 2007 so there was no reason for me to have a W2.

Although I did trade on the stock market. I just got my 1099 form from my brokerage firm and my question is: Do I only file Federal or is State also necessary?

Please advise!

depending on how much you made from it you may not have to file at all if you didn't pay taxes on it.
