Yeah, there are scams where people will send out 2-8 dollar checks to maybe 10,000 people across the world in one go. The crazy thing is that these checks are legitimate and you'll get that money if you cash them; they have to be real for the scam to work. The person who spent up to 80k (less since a lot of people will throw away the checks) will receive canceled checks or their equivalent with the routing and account numbers of of the people who cashed the check. Assuming they kept track of which check number they sent to which people they have name, address, and bank account information for up to 10k people.

Also, if you suspect that a check is fraudulent then attempting to cash it is a crime. One might wonder "how would they know you thought it might be fake?" Well if you email the scammer back saying anything like the OP did or stating that you doubt its legitimacy then that might be enough to get you on "knowingly passing a fraudulent instrument." Not sure what jackleg's going on about though. Sounds like a relevant warning. Thousands of people get fucked for trying to cash scammers' checks saying they'll wait to see if it clears. Hell, the OP said she was going to do that. Now the account-theft thing doesn't happen with large checks since that wouldn't be profitable, but simply passing the check could be considered criminal. You probably won't go to jail, but it could be a giant pain in the ass.

Yeah, obviously people don't always say things they mean- but it wasn't exactly a moronic warning given what you said in your post. While you shouldn't believe every idiotic thing someone says they'll do online, that doesn't mean you should assume nobody online would ever do something in the least bit stupid.
