A small company owned by Equifax is collecting salary data on millions of workers, without their permission or knowledge. Story at this link:http://www.ajc.com/business/content/business/stories/2008/01/18/worknumber_0120.htmlThis is an invasion of privacy if I ever saw one. What right does a third party have to know how much we're paid unless we want them to? Scarier is that they collect social security numbers as well. IMO this should only be shared with the IRS and social security administration. They claim to have safeguards in place, but I'm questioning the very rightness of their practice.

^nah, they use that as a unique identifier, but unfortunately its rampant overuse in the private sector in the last 30 years or so has made it the key to identity theft.

the only thing the state employees have going for them is that "perm full time" tag.... take out like 100k for retirement, taxes, and insurance and they're brokebut they'll never get firedalso, they don't update this thing at all

1/28/2008 5:52:04 PM
Okay, good point, it is pretty uncommon to make six figures in state service (unless you're a hotshot professor or politician...)But the whole "very difficult to be fired" thing is nice.
1/28/2008 5:56:33 PM
dude, there are so many profs that I've taken that make over 100k.seriously,engineering professors are not pinching pennies. Only the ones who haven't been here long or are only really focused on their research and not advancement in the university are on the low end. And by that I mean like 80k a year. And then my old humanity professors pull like 60k a year...
1/28/2008 5:57:50 PM
I think the foreign language professors are a really strange case.In one language, they'll have two teachers who the students make NO differentiation between whatsoever. But then one has been published, has his PhD, and makes 2x as much.
1/28/2008 6:02:08 PM
Just curious...but why do some people care so much about if other people know their salary?I mean I'm planning on being a teacher and that salary isn't going to be secret, but it's like it's not like it matters. Duh we all know doctors get paid more than garbage collectors...do you really need to hide that?
1/28/2008 6:04:57 PM
there are a few that are surprisingly low--dr. yu being one
1/28/2008 6:05:11 PM
if you don't have a PhD and you teach, you're still not making more than 50k. And depending on your situation it can be a lot lower than that.
1/28/2008 6:08:23 PM
1/28/2008 6:09:16 PM
i cant find anyone who i wanted to find on there.
1/28/2008 6:09:59 PM
But still...I mean I dunno, if you're not making that much I don't think it's really anything to be ashamed of. You can still be respectable and honest. If you're making a lot there's nothing to brag about, you've have the opportunities that some people didn't or didn't take advantage of. It doesn't always mean you're respectable and honest (look at Britney). I mean it's not like people go around with their salary written across their foreheads, but why do people want to keep them such secrets?
