Looking for an upconverting / upscaling (is there a difference?) dvd player,
preferably something fairly new within the past few months - year,

Blu ray player wouldn't be out of the question either, if it's reasonably priced,

just buy a new hddvd player. the a3 is $149 with 7 hd movies and it's one of the best up converters in it's class.
