NOFX was the first club show I went to (Mad Monk). They opened for Fishbone (whom they covered on The Longest Line EP). It was just after they released White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean in 1992.

I'm glad you're expressing a real interest in my opinion synapse. In the glory days of nofx, ending in 2003 with the iffy release War on errorism, Heavy Petting Zoo is by far the worst release. I think they wanted to go in a direction that was more akin to pop punk, had better production, and was more marketable (as evident on So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes) but the songwriting is lackluster, the lyrics aren't very memorable and it doesn't have the charm and sarcastic element that makes Nofx so great on their other releases. I think the main cause was the pressure of coming off of Punk in Drublic, one of the most successful underground punk records of all time.
