Figured we could use a general fish tank thread... I'm putting back together my 44 gallon freshwater aquarium.I've always kept cichlids before and would like to do something different this time. I'm sick of a few dominant fish killing off all the others.I was thinking discus but they may be to high maintenance for me.I usually think of community tanks as boring but i want color and variety.I filled it today and it's cycling. I want to do live plants - i've never had any success since my cichlids would uproot them.any suggestions?

There is already one in Chit Chat. http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=468189But anyway, we have a 10 gallon tank from Marineland. Nothing too special, only 4 fish and some snails, but it is growing.[Edited on January 26, 2008 at 6:44 PM. Reason : :]

I hate them. Its the best way to make your living room feel like the waiting room in a dentists office.

discus are very high maintenace. I had to do waterchange everyday for my discus. If you think you're up to the task, then go for it.

I had a saltwater tank for about a year. I don't have the $ to convert this tank to one or to buy a new setup. Mine is a 44 hex with a custom built wooden hutch. penguin filter.I guess I'll just go to fish pros and/or fish world next weekend (although I'm not sure where fish world moved too) I'll buy some cheap danios or tetras first to make sure the tank is okay...

I'll do that - I will get some base rock. Dunno if Kevin at Down Under has base rock, but he has a wonderful assortment of live rock which is where I got that from - that rock alone was 23lbs! lolI don't want to go all into reef keeping, I did that with my old 20gal high and it was just too high maintenance. I do want more rocks/caves for the fish I'm going to get - this will be a fish only tank with maybe a couple of low maintenance corals like mushrooms, etcOh, does anyone have any pics of tanks with a mirror background? We're thinking about doing that with this tank...[Edited on January 27, 2008 at 9:27 AM. Reason : add]
