Dammit the cat got neutered today. He was pretty "drunk" when I picked him up and 3 hours later he still hasn't changed much and has significant weakness in his back legs. Also there is some tissue poking out of his incision. I've worked with animals for years and it usually seems the animal is just sleepy after surgery. Should I be concerned?

Define "tissue poking out of his incision"Are we talking like his sutures have ruptured or is it just a little bit of skin?

with a neutering they leave the incision open for proper drainage...it is a pink bulge, not huge but not small...i've inspecting because it actually looked like a testicle but its just seems to be soft tissue...i'm worried about infection

yeah my bad i was thinking of spaying.....When the testes are cut, they are first tied in a knot to stop blood flow and then they're removed. (At least in the procedures I've observed). The stuff you see may just be the remnants of the "cord" if you will. Im not too sure how often they get infected though. Just keep an eye on him until tomorrow.

Just checked his temp and he's fine in that areaJust extremely lethargic and weak...especially considering the surgery was probably around noonNot a happy kitty at allScrotal area just looks a mess...large incisions, bloody, tissue hangingNot what I've typically experienced with a neutering

really? usually takes a day or so for them to get back to normal in my experience. my cat was def lethargic and did not want to eat. a little better the second day, and trying to run around and rip her staples out the third! i mean i dunno if it is different with girls. but the bfs cat got neutered and he seemed pretty pissed off for about a day too.

It always depends on the cat, but I'd be concerned, mine was drunk acting, but perfectly normal by that night. Also, his back end should NOT look horrendous. Honestly, for neuters you really shouldn't be able to see anything much different back there at first. I'd take him back tomorrow and show them, sounds like the vet may have just done a shitty job.

what vet did you go to?
1/22/2008 10:54:53 PM
Academy Animal Hospital in FayettevilleI know its typical for him to be lethargic and drunk afterwards and I've noticed some improvement in that areaRight now my big concern is just the bulge of bloody, pink tissue protruding from his scrotum

^That's seriously not normal, my cats you couldn't even see anything abnormal afterwards and their little fuzzy balls slowly dried up and got smaller over the weeks after the surgery.

did they actually stitch the scrotum, or leave it open? i know several vets don't even bother stitching it because it will close on its own. of course, one of my cats ended up with a small prolapsed scrotum that had to be cleaned and stitched up later. he had a similar "poking tissue" early on, but his just didn't heal correctly. watch it, keep it clean. if it doesn't improve in a couple days (or becomes inflammed), call the vet for a recheck.EDIT: on the second read, i realize it's still open. (sorry, i'm sleepy.) i stick to my "watch and wait" method spoil him a bit, too [Edited on January 22, 2008 at 11:11 PM. Reason : EDIT]

my cat was normal when i brought him home. acted like nothing was wrong.[Edited on January 22, 2008 at 11:24 PM. Reason : they stitched him up though.]

I am sure at this point you have called your vet, and the only reason you didnt do it yesterday was because it was afterhours.

when my cat was neutered they used some dermabond and he came home around noon and acted like nothing had happened. no lethargy or weakness. i would call just to check. i thought most boy kitties recover extremely quick...how old is he?
