Unless you have a job lined up and a valid work visa don't even thing about it.... unless you're rich and can just hang out.
1/20/2008 2:47:21 AM
interesting. so its hard to get a job there if you are just strolling by as an american?

i want to move to barcelona, but decided to move to tahoe first to try to save some money bc i was worried it might be hard to find work as an american, although i still really want to live in barcelona for some amount of time, i think you could probably find work, i still might go soon, but definetly want to go to tahoe since it's winter and all
1/20/2008 8:14:54 PM
barcelona is an awesome city
1/20/2008 8:16:19 PM
i was gonna go and not even worry about any kind of visa and just try to find under the table work at a small pub or something, but idk you think i should just get a visa instead? probably not that hard right?
1/20/2008 8:18:06 PM
i always hear teaching english is an easy way to get a job over there
1/20/2008 8:19:10 PM
yea that would be pretty cool, you'd prob definetly need a visa for that though, i wonder how you go about applying for such a thing
1/20/2008 8:22:04 PM
spanish embassy
1/20/2008 8:23:18 PM

1/20/2008 8:31:12 PM
well i feel pretty confident you could find a locally owned pub where the owner would let you tend the bar for tips, at the very least work in the kitchen, i mean plenty of mexicans work in america right? it's not really THAT inconceivable.and it's not really about the money man...if i was worried about that i would've stayed in nyc.[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 8:33 PM. 1/20/2008 8:32:22 PM
heh, there are plenty of illegal workers in europe--they just come from africa instead of mexico
1/20/2008 8:36:07 PM

I doubt you'd get away with it. Europe doesn't have quite the illegal immigration problem the US has. The US basically ignored it for too long and now Mexicans are a critical part of our economy. That's why they get away with it.You need a work visa to be in the country legally beyond a certain period of time, and for that an employer has to show that there isn't a qualified employee from (country X) available for the position. For pub work, I doubt that would ever be the case. For professional work, that's a different story. With an American accent, you'll stick out like a sore thumb. Eventually someone's going to ask you for your papers.[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 8:41 PM. Reason : ...]

If youre interested in Sweden you could always apply for grad school, the residence visa youll get as a result will allow you to work legally. Or you could always meet a swedish girl and become her 'sambo'. Essentially this grants you all of the benefits of marriage without the long term contract.
1/20/2008 8:44:50 PM
haha, i was wondering how long before you'd bring sweden up
1/20/2008 8:46:10 PM
yeah, i realize that i bring it up way too often. i was trying to avoid it in this thread but caved as the sambo thing is really underutilized
1/20/2008 8:47:52 PM
