From the CNN title, I didn't even know who it was at first. I guess I never really thought of him as a Cold War icon.

I was a pretty big chess nerd in middle school, I even traveled with the Martin Middle school chess team to a national tournament in Michigan.

I used to read his book and setup the chess board like he did in his big matches and recreate the wins he had.

Yup, rest in peace indeed.

his book sucked, but he was the man

unfortunately, 1/2 of the chess fan base is celebrating his death instead of mourning it

hsi book 'my 60 memorable games' is VERY good and is really rare (the original hardback edition)

^^^ that book is for beginners pretty much and if you are at least 1600 that book will seem terrible because its not for you

chess uses an elo rating system.. 1600 is about average

you can also look at 1600 in chess like a c- in college, about the lowest you can go without looking totally whack in general.

each site/organization is different... a 2200 on one server can mean much more than 2200 on another server

same with fide/uscf, etc

i am speaking in terms of otb standard games, not blitz crap. the only 'real' elo is the fide elo, since you only can get a im, or gm title from fide rated events.

i have the dvd, but only watched it once. it was all right though. i still fail to see how moving the queen out in the second move is a good opening, but whatever.

there's a fine line between genius and insanity. i would have paid money to see fischer play chess on yahoo and talk trash to his opponent. that'd be some entertaining shit, fosho.

what is it about being really good at chess and espousing irrational politics?

the point of that in the movie is showing the different styles of play

park players are very aggressive and therefore can bring the queen out much sooner (especially in speed) to hurry the attack.

the club/tournament player is more in it for the long well thought out games, where strategy and tactics are key. Therefore he develops his center and minor pieces before bringing the queen into the mix.
