I used to have one, racked up some hefty debt, paid it off and cancelled it...been without one for the past year and a half or so and I'm perfectly happy that way, however it's about time to start building some more credit and all that

So I'm looking for a good card with a decent rate and no annual fee, maybe some ancillary benefits or rewards, but basically a "decent" agency that doesn't explicitly try to dick me over from step one. Any you've been happy with?

Credit Card companies are all bastards.

I would try my bank first if I was you, particularly if you bank at a credit union.

I was thinking Citi, not sure if it's because I see a lot of them or if they have a particularly effective advertising scheme, but I might try them out.

I had problems with my Chase Mastercard, so I don't suggest that kind of bank card.
I do agree with the bank credit card statement.

The AmEx is the way to go. I've had the Blue, but now have a Gold card.

My dad used to have one of those with his company. One time when AmEx sent out a letter to all the Black card members by mistake, they sent everyone a nice Canon digital camera for free to apologize for their error. Pretty baller.

I have Citi and I like it fine. They gave me a higher limit than most other people I've heard about considering it was my first card, but it also has a high rate (after the into period ran out). But since I pay it off every month I don't care too much. If you have enough credit I'd look into getting one with rewards.

^^^^^ Amex charge cards in order

Black (centurian)
Platinum
Gold
Green

Then the rest of there credit cards with no annual fees, credit lines, and the ability to pay less than the balance.

There were some crazy charges that got put on our AmEx cc and they took the charges off without any question.
With the blue we also get 5% cash back from every purchase. That is why I suggested this one earlier.

If you carry a balance, this is a true statement. Granted, he has since indicated that he probably will carry a balance, but when you posted that, he hadn't.

paerabol, search consumerist.com for whatever company you're considering.

Why is american express the best one to have? I'm using a wachovia credit card right now and I've been wondering if there is something better out there.

other than a hefty apr (i was 19 at the time though) i had a good experience with capital one, in fact they just gave me a 4k loan with no interest for 18 months and ill have it paid way before that so it's pretty much straight borrowing

i don't know what their current rates are, but i have a visa through bank of america that i got when i was 18...it started out at 4% with no annual fee, and every time they'd bump it up (about once a year after 4 years), i'd call them, spend 2 minutes on the phone, tell them i'm still a student, and they'd drop it right back down again

that said, i've only carried a balance twice, every other time in 7 years, i've paid it off monthly...that might have something to do with it, but the BOA people at the branches told me i could call each time and get it reset, and so far it's worked

Discover, been using mine for 6 years now.

Amex is a terrible card to rely on. Not every place take them, and they work ass backward.
They don't pay the retailer until you pay them the money.

Of course, who can forget Capitol One

i never carry a balance

^^^ i don't rely on it exclusively, but i prefer to use it when it's accepted ... it's good for returns, etc., and their customer service is second to none

i also have a mastercard, provided by bank of ireland (not much good to any of you!)

Most all other companies are the same. There was some article on reward programs, but i can't find it. It said your best thing is rebate ones. Like someone said early, The Citi Platinum Dividend Card.

the best card depends on what you do

do you travel a lot?
via airplane or do you have to buy gas?
what, tell me, what?

^^Airplane CC's are some of the worst. Some article was talking about how all the airline miles you earn only earn you trips on very LIMITED dates, and a credit card with a cash back rebate plan will actually earn you enough money to go on the same flight anytime you want.

^ awesome customer service

-if you argue a charge its pretty much immediately taken off
-they are awesome for returns (if the merchant won't take it back for a refund they will)
-it extends the warrenty on purchases automatically
-if you break something within a certain amount of time after buying they refund the money
-if you find a cheaper price they refund the difference
-free road side assistance
-free bagage insurance
-if you lose the card you can still get money or check in your hotel
-there is a lot more things like this and this is only the basic card (the higher one's have even more shit.

The Delta AMEX is pretty badass.....if you open like a blue card and the Delta Skymiles one, there's no annual fee. You get a mile for every dollar you spend plus when you buy your flights with it, you get like triple points plus the frequent flier miles. It's pretty bad ass if you travel any........
